Over the week, AMD launched three of the first notebook GPUs in the Radeon HD 7000 series in a bid to stay competitive in the notebook GPU market, even if it means re-branding already launched GPUs like NVIDIA did, with its recent GeForce 600M series launch. The newly [re]launched mGPUs include Radeon HD 7400M, HD 7500M, and HD 7600M. The three are based on current-generation Caicos and Turks GPUs.

The HD 7400M is based on the "Caicos" silicon, featuring 160 stream processors, 8 TMUs, 4 ROPs, and a 64-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. The HD 7500M and HD 7600M are based on the "Turks" silicon, the HD 7500M features 480 stream processors, 24 TMUs, 8 ROPs, and 64-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface (more economical with lower number of memory chips, while offering the same performance as 128-bit DDR3); while the HD 7600M features all the features of the HD 7500M, including the full 128-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface.

few days ago here was article about new HP notebooks with 7600m and there was: "The new options that had been made available were Radeon HD 7670M, and Radeon HD 7690M, both based on the 28nm "Thames-XT" GPU" - it was to good to me true :(
 
I am very disappointed to see 40nm chips re-branded and turn into HD 7400, HD 7500, HD 7600.

I was hoping a report from Charlie on 24 Aug would somehow missed it's mark.

its known as return shots lol :toast: Tell u truth this is the low end market stuff being released which is OEM equipment, aka for the ones who just know how to turn it on and off, not fix them or tweak them. Normally Low End equipment can be recycled, its been goin on for years in both camps, wut counts is the high end stuff not being recycled. Its known as cost cutting which in turn reduces the amt of chips having to be engineered.

Problem is All mobile parts are OEM stuff. You don't buy laptop GPUs aftermarket! We can't buy a laptop with a great new CPU with an up to date GPU. And we cant swap that GPU part out.

And this relaunch IS A BAD THNG in my opinion, because it means all the *new* laptops designed now and launched in Q1.12 and Q2.12 will be using these, aka last generation. It means we are going to have to wait until Q3.12 until we get a material change in power/performance in laptops. THAT SUCKS

Modular GPUs in laptops, just like SODIMM or HDDs would be nice
 
I don't mind re-branded low end cards. The reason there is no point to make a completely new gpu for low end stuff if it is being used to just surf the web/youtube/netflix you don't need a "high end" Low end GPU.

Don't get me wrong I don't agree in re-branded GPU's in the high end segment as people can actually use the extra rop,shaders, etc.

There is MXM but yeah...it is not widely utilized. For true modular GPU tech in laptops, they need to design a socket interface for them. Problem is, it isn't like dropping in a new CPU. You have a lot more factors to take into account. While I could see it working across similar model lines, I don't see them making it possible to the degree you could buy a machine with say...a 7470 and later upgrade to a 7870/etc. Not unless it is designed for, but then, I don't see OEMs investing in this ability. They don't want people to keep laptops forever, they want more sales.

If you want the closest you can get to a modular GPU, the APUs are the answer to that. Trouble is, you are then limited on CPU upgrade options.
