After going through a month-long beta stage, Chrome 17 has now been promoted and is available as a Stable release for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Chrome 17 (build 17.0.963.46) features new Extension APIs, updated Omnibox Prerendering, download scanning protection, various tweaks and fixes for about 20 vulnerabilities.

Chrome 17 Stable can be downloaded via this page.

Chrome 17? Yikes, I best not fall asleep today, Chrome 18 might be out. What's with the insane version #'s?

Scrapped and rewritten 16 times, eh?

Unless this is some kind of new usage of the word "Version" that I was previously unaware of.

Seems like they have set the automatic version increase for each build, and when they're ready to release new version they simply increase the major version number.

And i bet they still haven't fixed their dumb retarded Google Mail Checker which is plain broken and they clearly don't give a damn otehrwise they'd fix it months ago. I'm gonna stick with Firefox that at least works properly...

Most definitely, extensions for Chrome are nothing compared to Firefox.

Hurry up Firefox, Chrome is surpassing you!!! Oh noes!!!

The chrome/firefox version number race has begun...

Well actually is in full swing

I'm sure IE is on the sidelines lol'ing and crying at the same time.

Google is free to increment versions how they see fit for development, not how it sees fit for the end user.

Why?

Because upgrades are 100% transparent to the end user :toast:

I really really really really like this upgrade model for it. I have version 17 already, and didn't even notice a change.

Come on Google, I can't choose where to install Chrome and updates are happening without asking me ... really? What kind of malwa... I mean software is that?

That is the problem

Why is it a problem? It keeps the system up to date, patched, and I have never experienced any real bugs with chrome, TBH.

Personally I find the chome update model to be exactly what other companies need to adapt.

Included with this model, is the rigorous testing, though. Google does a damn fine job. I can't convince myself to switch back to firefox, despite wasting time keeping it up to date and installed still. :banghead:
