Microsoft's next-generation Xbox game console, which has been unofficially referred to as "Xbox 720", has been reportedly given a codename by Microsoft so industry partners could use it, instead. It is now codenamed "Durango". The working-name "Xbox 720" has been received negatively by some quarters, that felt it implied 720p (1280 x 720) display resolution, which is not a big departure from the present-generation. 1080p (1920 x 1080) is expected of this console, as it's also reported to feature Blu-ray disc support. Durango will focus on improving human-interface, by creating a combination of Kinect and a newer gamepad with a touchscreen.

seriously?
People see 720 and think that its a reference to a resolution....
Gawd people are stupid.

Also, yeah, Durango is an improvement....

I wouldn't have thought that many people would have been aware of the 720p standard. It was popular for about a week, as far as i remember.

Maybe early flat screen adopters are still bitter about the number.

I see Durango and think of this

Changing the name based on investors opinions who obviously don't even use the console. Doesn't take a rocket science to see 360 turning into 720 makes perfect sense for anyone who actually uses the console. Only investors who don't would be confused and think that means resolution.

The major thing that sold the last generation consoles were references and buzz words to high definition. HD sound, HDMI ouputs, 720p 1080p.

To the general consumer whom is oblivious will think xbox 720 means 720p so it wont support my 1080p 50" LCD TV!

Consumers can be stupid. IMO I wouldnt risk calling it anything that might be misunderstood.

Nothing is wrong with 720p, as long as the screen is not too big (for it) and the viewing distance is proper.
17" 1280x1024 FTW!

The better idea is to change up the naming convention after just one generation.

The '360' in Xbox 360 was mocking Nintendo's 'Revolution' which they later renamed 'Wii'. Thus it made no sense to call it Xbox 720 in the first place!

The bigger question is why are Microsoft persuing 'improving human-interface' when most xbox 360 owners just want a gamepad!

Kinect might have sold well but can anyone name a single Kinect game that is actually worth making yourself look like a half-wit stamping on an anthill in your livingroom?

Shhhhhh now. 1280x1024 is terrible at any distance and size.

A touch screen on the controller? You're kidding me. As if controller prices weren't high enough already. :shadedshu

I think Kinect is pretty cool, even though I don't have an Xbox. I also think 3D is cool, and motion controllers, and all other things people say are gimmicky. It's fun :D.

Really ? I thought it was mocking Sony Playstation's controller

X Box 360
X Square Circle...

Hmm, shouldn't this one be XBox 540 then ? (360+180 for the triangle )

Oh you...

Oh for fck sake!! Don't pander to idiots... just call it 720!

so long as they dont actually release it as a durago , it just dosnt sound right and i wouldnt want my(male) mates permanently waffling on about a durago unless you imagined them actually talking about some version of new rapid rabit , that could make pc v console debates v funny , at least in My head

"" my new durago's sic pete had a go the other day loved it"":roll: eh its funny in my head:)

it's prob gonna have it's own version of RROD or something like that :slap:

thats petty old school mentality. I dont like the 360 better than any console and I just received one but even I know that the RROD thing is old news. They pretty much fixed that with the second gen jasper consoles. and im no fanboi.

Original Xbox consoles had issues too. M$ does not have a good track record. Took them too many years to admit and even fix the problem. Course neither does Sony. PS1 and PS2 both were known for having bad first gens. PSP1000 had button issues first gen. PS3, did have some issues but I more heard it across multiple gens and it was usually BD drive problems.

Only companies that tended to have better quality first gens have been Nintendo and Sega.

But none of that will matter if M$'s rumored specs come true. Midrange graphics chips...gah. Yeah it will be an improvement but we'll see games pushing it to max much quicker.

In regards to the graphics, IMO, they can only get so much better. Back in the day, we had pixelated Marios, then Marios with octagonal hats, and now we have Marios with perfectly rounded hats. My point is, all the big jump in graphics have already been made. A game made in 1995 would look DRASTICALLY better than a game made in 1990. Now, a game made in 2011 would only look slightly/somewhat better than a game made in 2006. Hell Crysis [2007] looks about the same, if not better, than Crysis 2 [2011] (w/ DX11 patch).

They probably don't need to cash out all that money on putting a 7970 in their systems when graphics can only go so far. I think they'll be fine with a 6750 or whatever GPU they put in their system.

If the new Xbox is anything like the Dodge Durango it will catch on fire before its even plugged in.

I'll take better graphics over gimmicky touchscreen and motion kinect thingy. I wouldn't care what xbox did if it didn't affect PCs.

who dares insult thy 1280 x 1024!?!? >_>
*runs away
