A little later this month, NVIDIA will launch the GeForce GTX 680, a single-GPU graphics card based on its GK104 performance GPU. It is reported that NVIDIA will design a dual-GPU graphics accelerator based on the same chip, which will then be positioned as an enthusiast product. Called the GeForce GTX 690, this dual-GPU solution will arrive in May.

NVIDIA's approach to the high-end segment, so far, is identical to that of AMD. It hasn't unveiled its enthusiast GK100 GPU, yet, and is instead using performance-segment GK104 for both its single-GPU high-performance graphics card, and as a dual-GPU part in an enthusiast-grade product. This buys NVIDIA plenty of time to release the GK100, unless AMD can offer a new GPU that trumps GK104 in performance, significantly.

With this card launcing in May I don't see the GK100 launching in this series at all.

Yea, the predictions that GK100 would just become the 7xx series are becomming increasingly more accurate.

I also agree. It looks like GK100 isn't happening at all, GK110 instead, and a few months in the future at least...

Everything now indicates that the HD 7970 will retain the single-GPU performance crown for the foreseeable future.

Every rumor I read said the top-end GK104 would barely edge out the HD7970...

I will file this rumor in the same category as GK104 launching in February. Not gonna happen.

They will not make a GK100/GK110 at all, that's what i think maybe they renamed the GPU code names instead of the renaming the 6XX names

if it's pass 7970 just in one FPS it will be not necessary to launch something better, this is NVIDIA goal, fasts single GPU on planet. no matter how crappy is.

If it does come, I fear what the price of this dual-gpu card will be.. GTX680(read GK104) speculations currently are going @550$ :twitch:

I think my two 7970's will serve me just fine, and in the mean time I will keep my eyes open for some EK blocks that I can grab on some sort of sale lol. The next GeForce will be faster than the 7970, but by how much and if so when. The rumor mills are printing these rumors faster than our president prints money who can keep up any more with this crap.

Eh well the rumors I've seen only say that the 680 will be +/- 10% faster/slower than the 7970, and I read one rumor saying that the 7970 is faster in 3d mark.
And let's not forget AMD doesn't even have mature drivers out for the 7970 and the 7870 is faster than it in a couple of titles.
... Oh and that if it's so great why won't Nvidia release actual benchmarks for the 680?
The only solid piece of evidence we've seen is a Samaratain demo which for all we know could have been given optimized drivers for the 680, unlike the 580 tri sli.
Don't forget how old and low end the GPUs in the current consoles are yet they're able to toss out modern games at half-decent graphics levels thanks to drivers and optimized programming.

I see no reason why Nvidia couldn't have done something to pull out all the power from it to make it appear like they had a completely killer product.

I would rather not say anything until we see real evidence.

unless AMD can offer a new GPU that trumps GK104 in performance, significantly.
But more significantly we have not idea how the GK-104 performs, so that's putting the cart before the horse.

Another NV dual GPU that cheaps on critical components like VRMs and fails with the slightest overclock? High end cards should have tweaking space unlike the GTX 590.

ok then I will wait for dual

Given its 195W TDP on the single GPU card, don't expect double the performance on the dual.

uh we know that isn't true now. Also I resent the fact that AMD was even claiming the crown before a similar generation CPU to compare with (aka GTX 680) even came out yet. How can you claim a crown when you're only fighting older 500 series competetion?... you won't find such trickery with Nvidia. Case in point >>http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/26309-dual-gk104-card-comes-in-q2

Quote: "However, the GK110 will not be ready in months and by the time it appears AMD’s next generation could be just around the corner. In fact, it would be unfair to even compare the GK110 to current generation Radeons, which will be more than nine months old by the time GK110 shows up."
At least someone has the truth and honor of it. :toast: or is a hypocritical AMD fan trying to get fairness when AMD was unfair to claim single cpu crown by going against older CPUs in the first place. We saw what happened when the evenly matched Kepler showed up.... bam, :nutkick: 10, 9, 8 ... knockout.
