I keep os n certain files on that drive n keep games etc on other drives

Sorry, these are pointless. Like said before by others, take 2x 7200 500gb and raid them. If you need a fast 1gb drive for storage.. will save you alot of money.

Now days you should Have OS and (everyday games) on SSD and old school HDs for Storage/porn/VMs.

This is HANDS DOWN the best deal on A GREAT SSD Mushkin Enhanced Chronos MKNSSDCR120GB 2.5" 120GB ...
120GBs 500MB read & write for $120.00

Throw in 2x w/ Raid 0 Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Ca...

You now have +100% more Storage and 250% more (total) speed @ the same cost!

(Total) = 7,200 RPM x2 = 14,400 RPM - 10k RMP = +4k RMP for Storage/porn/Other. If you were too take the V.raptor Vs the Mushkin SSD .. well dont .. it does not have a chance in hell.

I saw the poll went up.
I chose the 1TB VR simply because I could sell it for $320, buy a SSD for $120 and have $200 left for beer.

I'm wondering how well these will work with one of the caching SSD's that are now out?

VelociRaptors were outdated when they first launched. And it looks that hasn't changed. All WD could muster in two years was a ⅔ increase in capacity and a small bump in performance. Seriously? It really isn't anything else but a slow HDD. Those that are interested in high-performance storage for their PC and are in their senses buys SSDs instead, or hybrid drives* at the very least.

Surprised WD doesn't see this.
*Seagate does.

SSDs are still too expensive.
I have well over 120GB or programs I use almost every day......
That doesn't include games......

If I won the lottery, then that's another matter...

I'll take the Raptor, please.

Not a huge Seagate fan (love my Blacks), but I've been curious about the hybrids... Anyone got a good, reliable review/comparison? The 'Egg has the 750s for $150 right now, and I'm tempted to break out the emergency card to edge my system up a bit. My Skyrim install expanded beyond my 12Gb RamDisk, and I had to go back to the HD. Would be nice to grease that up a bit...

SSD's are nice, but still rather expensive for the Space. I have been using Raptors for years and I think they do fine. I may give one a shot sometime.

Too Expensive ? If $120.00 for 120Gb with 500 MB read/write is to expensive then gaming on computers is wrong for you. This $120.00 with be the best investment for your computer. I really dont think ppl understand how much faster everything is, When I work on others computers ... I get so mad , everything is slow .. loading programs, restarts.

The time the SSD will save you alone is worth the $120.00.

I will say this .. windows 7 is a Must for SSD .. I have used them with XP and Vista .. that will make you rage.

BTW here is my Mushkin 120gb SSD ATTO benchmark from two nights ago after fresh reinstall of 7.

RAID won't help you with access times (it can actually make them worse) which these drives are good for. Sequential speed isn't important for the OS drive.

I understand how much faster they are. Really, I do. 120GB is not alot of space for me. I need at LEAST 450GB for all my games & other things (I have alot) My raptors still have not gotten to the point where I think, Wow, This is so slow, I need to spend alot of money on something with alot less space but faster. Not going to happen. Raptors load plenty fast for me. It's just the new fad. Not everyone needs it. My 600GB Raptor was $209.00. A 600GB SSD is Over $1,000. (Comparing Space to Space price) I know the SSD is alot faster.

Wtf is up with that poll? 120 GB SSD? Did nobody price check either option? A 256 GB M4 is LESS than the 1 TB raptor.

I'd much rather have a SSD than anything made by WD.

This hard drive will fill a certain niche of consumers like my friend that need blazing access to their large HD porn collection pushing 1TB.

I got my vertex 120's for $90 each after MIR.

A little over 5 seconds to boot windows. My games and media run off my 6TB array. Coming from multiple RAID setups, the speed increase of SSD's are enormous, and well worth the price, and the marginal setup it takes to tweak them with other HDD's to achieve the performance/storage I needed.

I will spend the money on SSD's on performance builds now every time.

With TRIM they don't slow over time, and if they do, run maintenance.

I was wondering if WD was ever going to make one of these larger than 640gb. Of course like all the others they are over priced by a large margin.

Gets in a plane to get HIGH enough to see the price tag. Anyways if the price was more reasonable i be more for the raptor as i have enough SSD space as it is.

You can never have enough SSD space :)

Good idea, BAD price :(

I always liked Raptor drive's and have a few still spinning away after many year's :)

Posted from my phone :o

I do :). Only need it for OS and some games as not all need it.. In fact some games it can be annoying one being Skyrim when you try to read the bit of text when changing area's as it only stays on for a second lol.

Is there any benefit using Intel's Smart Storage Technology with a small SSD and this hard drive or is it already fast enough?

it it has been updated, perhaps...

People throwing prices like 120$ for an SSD showld remember one thing. No everybody is living in North America. Some of us, are Europeans or Eastern Asians, where the prices are almost double... ;) So ease up please with those fairy tale prices please.

Just get a 5400 rpm 3TB drive and pair it with an SSD cache drive. You will get better performance for about the same price. After the caching kicks in.

Most people who complain about the capacity of SSDs are missing the point. You use them for your OS and critical apps, and maybe a few games.
Regular hdds are fast enough for storing everything else, and are relatively inexpensive.

Paying this much money for a regular platter hdd is plain retarded.

This annoys me too but I didn't want to feel like an ass for complaining that my system loads too fast.

<snip>

Absolutely, I've got the caching working on my system and it's awesomely fast.

Umm , you are saying that because you live in Europeans or E. Asians your prices are almost double .. then the V.Raptor would be $600.00 and the SSD would 240 ...

Whats your point .. the SSD is still A better deal even if all your prices are doubled.
