Valve is releasing the Source Filmmaker (SFM), the movie-making tool Valve uses to make movies inside the Source game engine. SFM has been used in quite a number of Valve trailers. SFM is currently available in beta. To apply, simply visit the official website with a computer that already has Steam installed on it. "Initially, we are limiting the number of beta users, but soon we will release the SFM to all users on Steam for free," Valve's FAQ explains. At launch, SFM will only work within Team Fortress 2, meaning fan-made Half-Life movies using SFM won't be possible for a while. However, Valve notes that "users familiar with modding with the Source engine will be able to mod the SFM build of TF2 to create new worlds."

If you're interested, here's what you'll need for Filmmaker:

-OS: Windows 7 / Vista (Windows 7 64 bit suggested)
-Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
-Memory: 2GB (4 GB suggested)
-Hard Disk Space: At least 15 GB of Space
-Video: NVIDIA GeForce 200 series card or better, or AMD Radeon 3000 series or better (NVIDIA GeForce 400 series or AMD Radeon 5000 series preferred)
-Monitor: 1366 x 768 (1920 x 1080 suggested)
-Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatible
-USB headset with mic (suggested)

As a small bonus we finally get to "Meet the Pyro"!

Best "meet" video EVER!

Looks great but I'm wondering why they specify a USB headset. I would never, ever use a USB headset.

TF2: The Animated Series

I cannot believe no one has commented on the "Meet the Pyro"! movie yet but me. IT WAS AWESOME!

It leaves people speechless.

Twas amazing though, no doubt.

Couldn't care less about the SFM. I lack an artistic vein.

I think the purpose of the USB headset is to allow multiple streams that aren't using the same processor. I have a decent one that came with an old plantronics headset. Has an oxygen chip inside with decent sound for a USB sound card.

And agreed, Meet the Pyro was pretty awesome.

now we can look forward to a bunch of terribly produced game videos by angsty teens.

So that wasn't already happening with said "angsty teens" using GMod?

No look forward to awesomely produced game videos and ignore the terribly produced ones. Duh...

fuck this shit! give me TF3 already!!!

@news of release: this is amusing, actually, because I have a parody script written down that I was going to try and make with green screen / pinnacle and in-game Steam wizardry. I'll have to see if I can get in the beta and give it a try!

@video: pyro's always been my favorite class and I've been sadface because they never released a video. Now they did. And it's awesome.

nice video but i want sdk 2012 not a stupid movie making programm on source!!!

I want the rainbow flamethrower.

I need it.

the problem with that statement is that there is no SDK 2012 adding to that is the fact that there is not many changes internally

Ther are large ammount of changes of current uptodate source engine compared to 2007 version!

and its surprised that there is no sdk 2012 released atm.. fucking mod content that got released on portal and other source games doest support full modding like sdk 2006 2007!

"the official website?" I don't see crap on Steam.

What is the "official website?"

you sir are a blithering nut
you do realize source SDK was updated last year right ?
install it from steam
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_SDK_Release_Notes
don't install the 2007 version install the Source SDK
it auto updates with every release
the reason for keeping the 2007 version available is because from 2008 onward changes where made that can break things
pretty much when ever there is a Source engine update the SDK gets updated as well
