Ssd prices have gotten lower. For example, this 256gb crucial m4 is $204 for $.80 a gb. Thats pretty darn good for an ssd.

Should we (I) be waiting a little longer for the prices to drop further?

I am waiting until winter and Windows 8 to buy my first SSD. Prices are only going to go down further.

likely 25nm supplies are being cleared now for the new 20nm. once that ends there is no telling what will happen with the prices. 20nm could offer 50% more capacity at the same price or it could skyrocket. 15nm in two years will hold 600GB of data and that seems more usable.

Still not really a good time though. If that M4 is priced the same as a 250GB Velociraptor, then that would be great.

The raptor is .60 per gigabyte. If it gets that low I will get one for sure

For me, in my new/next build looks like 500Gb 64Mb cache Raptor is ~ $150 here, 256Gb SSD (minimum for me) is cheapest ~ $200 +/- $10.

Seems like an easy choice to me.

Edit: Looks like the prices went up since the other day, $200 for 500Gb

I have a 500gb hdd now. I only use 100gb of it with games and everything.... so space is not a concern.

I have the m4 (the 128GB version) and I upgraded from a 750GB HDD... I haven't missed the space too much - it is amazing how much crap you can offload to a storage drive and forget about. The speed difference is absolutely incredible - like having a totally new machine.

You would be surprised how little of a bottleneck all the other components are until you see it for yourself.

That being said - if the primary use of the computer is games, then its really not that big of a deal - once the loading screen is done, your really dont get the benefit of an SSD anymore, unless you experience texture loading lags or something.

I don't know if I would get one initially for my laptop which I use more, or my desktop.

Heres an OCZ vertex 3 120gb for $89.99

OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III ...

I have a friend who got an OCZ agility 3 240gb for 190 on tiger. Yeah, they're gonna get much cheaper as time goes on, but if you look around a little there's good deals.

I got a Vertex 4 128Gb for about the same price shipped, and with the firmware updates it's a win win!

If and when I do get an ssd, its going to be a Marvell or Samsung controller based ssd. Sandforce has to many problems. Maybe indilix after its had more time in the wild.

Actually that ocz vertex III is what made me looking at ssd's and partially prompted this thread.

indilix is and is going to be the controller of choice and I'd bet it wont take them long to figure things out.
Also You cant go wrong with Vertex III, I had one and sold it to upgrade to V4...
Im not a fan of compression before its written to the drive... To slowww

In your opinion, why is now the time to upgrade to an ssd. I use 100gb out of my 500gb hdd. 256 is just away of future proofing.

If you need SSD for your laptop, then you don't need to think at all unles capacity is really your top priority.

I'm using SSD in 2 my laptops, first Corsair Force 3 in Aspire One netbook and now Crucial M4 in Compaq lappy. It's great, no worries about shocks and vibrations, less heat, longer battery life and much better responsiveness. And since i don't have massive stuff on laptop, space is no problem either. But i still have few gigabytes of music on it, few gigabytes of games and few movies. The rest is on a portable drive.

For a desktop PC, i still have doubts. I'd only buy it for productive work that would give you salary. For toying around, only if you have loads of cash and you don't know where to spend it. I mean i have a single 2TB 7200RPM drive and i don't miss SSD at all. Sure it would boot faster and few things would work faster but frankly i rarely cold boot my system (Hybrid sleep, Hibernation) and most of the apps are cached anyway so they start instantly.

I still thinking if I will get one now, or wait. The price point/performance is what is making me consider it. Its not like I need an ssd. If I did I would then have to decide if I wanted to go with my laptop or gaming desktop. Both have 500gb hdd's with 100gb used.

Is now the time for an SSD upgrade?

I'd wait. Especially on video cards and motherboards. Although, SSD prices will be declining precipitously from here. You're not even close to a bottom. Just think of the fallout in prices from release to today in the DDR3 1333 2x2GB kit...and you'll be close.

I'm personally shooting for the second week in October for PC purchases.

:D,

Liquid Cool
