Australian state bans YouTube from public schools

Australian state Victoria has decided to ban access to YouTube from public schools. The state made this decision in an attempt to slow "cyberbullying". Cyberbullying is the simple act of bullying someone using the internet. The main YouTube clip that triggered this was a very controversial one. The clip was recorded by a group of people a mentally-challenged girl met over the internet. The group harassed her, made her perform sexual activities, peed on her, and then set her hair on fire, all with the intent of recording it on camera for YouTube. Victoria has approximately 1,600 schools withing it's borders.

So... it's YouTube's fault that some sick fuckers are out there exploiting people? As far as I know, YouTube doesn't encourage such behavior, they just host user uploaded content. 99% of the internet would count as "unqualified" user uploaded content, you might as well just pull the entire internet out of the school...

Most school districts in the US block all these sort of sites already. Its simple really, school computers are for research and office work. Not surfing youtube or myspace etc.

These sorts of things should be banned anyway... and the movie that they talk about was never linked to youtube, they sold it at their school on DVD... idiots.

I think it only makes sense to get rid of youtube. Sure some sites that are blocked are pretty dumb, but really school computers are solely for research and school work, it's completely understandable that such things as YouTube, which if you really really really tried, you might get some research information out of, are really for personal entertainment and hte like.

I doubt that video was ever actually on YouTube.

It never made youtube at all - the kids sold it on DVD at their school. They got caught (they didnt hide who they were) and it made a huge fuss here in the land of aus.

I guess one of them mentioned he thought of putting it on youtube, so some idiot politician banned it... nevermind that kind of video would be pulled off the tube in a matter of hours.

Sounds to me that the boys that did this are more mentally and socially challenged that the poor handicapped girl. With the girl, everyone knew she was handicapped. For the boys, it was not until their behaviour/actions were caught did anyone understand the extend of the social problems in young kids today.

I think the politician is correct to ban time-wasting entertainment in schools. Whether he used this news item as a rational is mute. We don't go to school to watch DVDs, play consoles, or watch yourtube.
