Prolimatech Megahalems may rank among the best CPU air coolers, but starts at a relatively high $70. The company unveiled new cost-effective variants, under the Megahalems Basic line. The Megahalems Basic-81 maintains the same dimensions as the original, with the same number of fins, except the 81 expensive aluminum fins (across both stacks) are replaced by stainless steel ones. The heat pipes and base are still made of copper, with the base even being given a mirror finish. The Basic-81 is priced at just $32.

Next up is the Basic-45, a compact aluminum fin tower heatsink that uses 45 fins to which heat is conveyed by four 6 mm-thick copper heat pipes, which draw heat from a copper base. The cooler ships "no-frills," with just the retention kit. You add your own fan. It's priced at just $14. The company is also said to be working on a slightly larger cooler, the Basic-48, which features 48 aluminum fins, and three nickel-plated copper heat pipes.

Good value coolers.

Dear,btarunr

I'm the author of this news, how can i contact u?

Not sure about those stainless steel fins. Steel is really bad at conducting heat compared to Aluminium. But I guess that they must have had a few thoughts about it. I´m curious how it will perform.

And $14 sounds like a declaration of war to me...

I'm curious about steel fins too, not only it has a worse conductivity than aluminum, it's pretty heavy too.

aluminum 200+
copper 400
stainless steel 16

However, I do like the simple look of this heat sink. For the prices of decent closed loop systems, I cannot justify buying this + a fan for about $25 shipped + taxed. I bought a H60 for $45 and I've seen H50 goes for as low as $35 when on sale. Just my own opinion.

lol, looks like Prolimatech is falling far behind Thermaltake, Noctua, and Cooler Master.

Says who? Megahalems are still good cooler. Prolimatech makes other decent coolers too. You always here D-14 and 212+. Like to see how it stacks up against the 212

since these ship passive, likely not very well at all.

 I assumed that is what you meant, but with fans comes cost for n00bie buyers.

Well I'm comparing these coolers to what Thermalright has recently released (Silver Arrow SB-E, Archon SB-E x2) and Noctua/Cooler Master's upcoming products. Prolimatech is certainly lacking in innovation.

They need an upgrade surely
