Dutch site Tweakers.net has reported that Dell is planning to introduce a new Precision series mobile workstation laptop. Dubbed the Precision M3800, this workstation on-the-go will pack a super high resolution display to the tune of 3,200 x 1,800 pixels. Phew, that's a lot of pixels, and all of them will be spread across 15.6-inches of diagonal real estate. Also in tow is a powerful Intel Core i7-4702MQ quad-core Haswell processor, 16 gigs of RAM, option between a 1 TB HDD or 512 GB SSD (hint, pick the SSD) and of course, the 15.6" 3,200 x 1,800 display (which can also be swapped with a 1080p panel... Right!)

The Dell Precision M3800 will reportedly measure just 18mm in thickness (0.7 inches) and weigh less than an average newborn, in just 2KG (about 4.4 pounds). The publication mentions that the starting price of the workstation will be $1,699, but could go up to $1,999 (you got to pay for the pixels). Of course, nothing's official. All we can do is wait for Dell to go official with the device, and hope that the specifications mentioned come true.

Can I be the first to say "about fucking time".

That's no Dell Precision. That's a freaking XPS laptop with a Precision badge slapped on top. Where's the NumPad? Where's the nub mouse? Where's the Quadro GPU? :shadedshu

Source doesn't say Dell.
Of course it will have FirePro/Quadro GPU's, and I doubt the image is the actual workstation.

still doesn't compete with the MBPr

To big resolution for just a 15" monitor...Windows DPI scaling will be a disaster. Or wait and see how the Java/Active X/Flash based applications will look :)))

Windows 8.1 is supposed to have much better DPI scaling than Vista/7/8.

The MBPr is a consumer level device so you are right.

Dell's Precision line is normally aimed at professionals who do AutoCAD or similar work.

AUTOCAD without a numberpad...try again. also, autocad does not support hi dpi displays yet. sooo... you fail.

the MBPr has a better display and is lighter at the same price point.

Easy there...your fanboyism is showing through-and-through. It's O.K., though, you're not alone in that. Apple has lots of its minions running around butthurt every time their competition stomps on them.

Yeah, if you use Metro interface. The thing is not necessary the OS scaling problem here, is mostly the APPLICATIONS. From Java apps, toolbars, icons, menu size, etc, they are all changing size with various resolution. I hate that/

It hasn't even been released it and you already can claim it's a better display despite having a lower resolution? Holy fuck, can you ride Apple any harder? Also, Inventor supports 150% scaling on my current M4600 Dell Precision just fine. Are you informed of ANY topic, or do you just like spouting nonsense?

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:.........:laugh:

Who cares about the weight for a mobile workstation? Nobody, because all you care is the hardware and cooling.
And I seriously don't get this modern crap of a laptop being too heavy? Eat a steak everyday and do some shoveling, it will become light as a feather.

EDIT: the current mobile workstations already have the best screens you can buy for a laptop (10-bit IPS which aren't found on the consumer side since the GPU needs to support it)

This looks like an incredible laptop - I love my retina mbp, but this thing does look like more machine for the money - and the screen looks super nice too.

Then again it is dell and its gonna run windows 8 so... er... no thanks. Font scaling will be a huge problem.

I just want the screen.

er... ahh.. um... no workstation gpu?

I saw on another site (Engadget IIRC) that it'll be shipping with a Quadro GPU.

Also, I'm pretty certain Dell will continue the 4x00 series and the 6x00 series for folks that still want the full laptop experience instead of the ultra-light design of this.
