Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced at its annual Mobile Solution Forum in Taipei that it has developed a 1.8"-type 64 Gigabyte (GB) flash-solid state drive (SSD). The new flash-SSD is based on an eight gigabit (Gb) single-level-cell (SLC) NAND, which provides significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs. The read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD have been increased by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively over the 32GB flash-SSD Samsung introduced last year, meaning that the new SSD's ability to outperform conventional rotating-media hard drives is even greater than had been anticipated.



Samsung's continued nano-technology migration is a key enabling factor in the continued market segmentation for storage media. Besides the use of the 64 GB flash-SSD for notebook PCs, 8~16GB flash-SSDs will become viable solutions for use in personal navigation systems and digital camcorders, as will hundred GB-level flash-SSDs for use in the server market.

The flash-SSD, a drop-in replacement for a hard disk drive, is a secure and reliable means of storing personal or work-related data. It uses instantly-accessible, non-moving NAND flash memory instead of the noisier, power-hungry, jarring-sensitive rotating disc found in conventional hard drives, allowing it to upload and download data quickly and quietly with minimal power consumption.

Samsung plans to start mass production of the 1.8"-type 64GB flash-SSD in the second quarter of this year.

What are the performance stats on this drive or other solid state flash drives? Price???
 
I know they access data a hell of alot faster than even the raptor drives. Im blown away at how small they are starting to make them. Too bad my phone's storage drive wasn't upgradeable. Otherwise, Id buy me one of these bad boys.
 
the phantom drives !!!! Lots to read about but none for sale.
 
how reliable are these? they probably last longer than hdd's, but only because they're meant to go into a laptop, and laptops get moved.
 
flash based products have awesome access times, nanoseconds vs. milliseconds - they're awesome for say, loading an OS or quick random accesses (searches)

Most however, are slower in raw throughput - once they find the file, flash based devices cant push it through as fast.

My goal is 32GB flash for boot drive, then sata-II for everything else.

that sounds sweet, but i want one just as my main hdd, it has to be fast than a 5400 rpm hdd? and it probably doesn't die so much due to heat, i have a fan blowing on my hdd just to keep it under 40 C
 
flash based drives:

Use about 40% less power
run at lower temps
have no moving parts - dropping etc wont break em
last longer (again, no moving parts)
as for speed, most of em move 40-70MB/s - they arent on USB2.0 here to slow them down.
