Last month, techPowerUp reported that Apple had accidentally listed an 8-core Mac Pro on its website, and although it was quickly removed, the new machine genuinely has been launched now. The new Mac Pro comes with either two quad-core 3.0GHz "Clovertown" Xeons or two dual-core "Woodcrest" Xeons running at up to 3.0GHz, and it will also accommodate up to 3 terabytes of storage with up to 16GB of RAM. When it comes to graphics cards you can chose between an NVIDA GeForce 7300GT (up to four of those actually), an ATI Radeon X1900XT or an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500. The most basic model starts at $2,200, but if you want the 8-core version with 3TB hard drive space and 16GB of RAM you'll be spending at least $10,292 - and even then you only have a 256MB GeForce 7300GT. At least the shipping's free.

This comes just after the release of Adobe's new Photoshop CS 3, which is likely in an effort to attract any professional image editors who are looking to upgrade with the new software, although it could quite expensive if you like to have the best machine available.

I'd LOVE to see you build a dual quadcore clovertown machine for $4000 or less. The Intel Xeon X5355 Clovertown 2.66GHz on Newegg is $1200 EACH , and that is the lower model. The 3.0ghz is obviously more. So that's at LEAST $2400 JUST for the processors. Now tack on all of the other hardware including the FB-DIMMs and you are WAY over $4000 for the base model. Even if you could match it, it still can not run OSX.

Argue what you want, but the Apple Mac Pro's are extremely well priced for what they offer. The run a great OS, and look great as well.

Let's keep the OSX vs Windows debates down guys - everyone has different preferences so there is no 'right or wrong'. The news is about the hardware anyway, not the OS, if someone posts about the Leopard launch then it might be more fitting, but the discussion should be about the Mac Pro, not arguments over operating systems. :)

1500 bucks for two 3.0ghz Clovertown is cheap...for 1500 you get only one if you buy else where.

Dual Quadcore 3.0ghz Clovertown
1GB RAM
250GB HDD
ATI 1900xt

$4245

Upgrade your RAM outside of Apple and that is a SERIOUS machine.

ok, sorry about my previous post. i guess its just a matter of taste and arguing is useless. :slap:

Yep!

You won't build it cheaper yourself with the same hardware and features, and last I checked, Dell doesn't even offer anything with 8 cores AND the out of the box features of a Mac.

i drool everytime i look at it. are there any pics of it on the inside. interested to see the arrangement.

now the website says you can choose from 3 graphics options including the 1900 XT. im sure it will support the dx 10 cards when they come out. imagine 2 clovertowns , 16 gigs of ram and 2 r600s. good lord i just wet myself!

I've done the best I could find with a pic of the inside, not to detailed though.

Thats alot of heat and alot of power drawn on that rig.

Well, electricity isnt all the cheap everywhere. We have the TVA and its cheaper than most places, but still, a draw like that is more power and heat. True, it doesnt necessarily mean that, but an 8 core will have more power and heat dissipation than a dual core or quad core.

Im sorry, what? ::rofl::

Coal power is dirt cheap. The problem is, it also causes a lot of pollution (way more than gas) so it's rarely used. There is still plenty of coal in the world, but very little demand for it so the price stays low.

If you want power, buy a gaint lemon farm, and wire them up!

Actually, the worst environmental factor of coal use is the process by which they extract it. Strip mining devastates areas. There are actually very very clean coal production plants in existence, the problem is there are very expensive. Coal is still by far the most dominating producer of electricity ( at least in the United States ), as it accounts for over 57%. The fact that there is so much demand and available resources, is why the price is so low.
