AMD Readies 28 nm "Tonga" to Take on GM107

I really hope these cards will address the unacceptable idle power consumption with multimonitor usage and AMD videocards. That would not be an insignificant improvement at all! It's actually the main reason why I'm still not sure whether to upgrade my videocard to a new NVidia or AMD one.

Have a look at this chart to understand what I'm talking about:

Nvidia has their own issues with their low power cards and new "performance" drivers, and other drivers it seems. I would rather burn off a whole extra 10 watts to keep my screen from going black or flickering.

That's two different architectures; the OP states that this new GPU will use the same architecture as the old one. A better comparison is the 3870 to 4870, which were both on the 55nm process and both used VLIW5, although the 4870 did have architectural tweaks compared to the 3870. The OP indicates that the new GPU doesn't even have that opportunity to improve performance.

You comparing years of stiched up r&d to be delivered as stillborn performing gpu called hd2900xt at nearly exclusively ATi used 80nm for it after rather successful test batch rv570, and aside from quite few small dies named nvidia 8500/8600 series which were badly packed after production. So AMD take what they had and just dumb shrinked it to 55nm to make it viable product and rebrand it to hd3870 (rv670). While hd4870 was cleanup job from done from solid grounds. They actually revised everything they could from way better mc to vliw5 pipeline actually being accompanied with so necessary more texturing and filtering units to actually fix up broken rops on r600/rv670 series. I guess with r600 2.5 or as they call it rv770 they actually done job what they meant to be done year and half earlier but only this time with graciousness from amds cpu business money pouring into years of bad managed atis r&d which was used as camouflage for sucking money out of company.

Anyway much could be done but as rumors go on this new 28nm chip will only maybe stitch broken power features that occurs as black screen of death in many bonaire (hd7790/r7 260(x)) and hawaii based chips, and solve issues for amd that it needs to produce big die as hawaii as they pretty much depleted that cherry picked chips that they been collecting for never trully launched hd7990 as there was no real market for 500W+ power hog aside marketing purpose to have king of the hill.

Bring on the Tanga chip. Is summer anyways! :))
