Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today launched the 850 PRO, a new solid state drive (SSD) line-up featuring Samsung's cutting-edge three-dimensional (3D) vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory technology. The new Samsung 850 PRO, unveiled at the 2014 Samsung SSD Global Summit in Seoul, offers a new breed of performance for solid state drives and will be available globally across 53 markets from this month.

Based on Samsung's proprietary V-NAND technology, the new 850 PRO is ideal for use in high-end PCs and workstations. Samsung's V-NAND features a proprietary vertical cell structure and represents a breakthrough in overcoming the density limit currently facing planar NAND architecture used in conventional flash memory, yielding significant speed, endurance and energy efficiency improvements.

"With the new 850 PRO V-NAND SSD, Samsung is introducing the next major evolution of SSD technology, taking the lead in delivering high-density SSDs with outstanding endurance, performance and energy efficiency," said Unsoo Kim, senior vice president of branded product marketing team at Samsung Electronics. "We are fully committed to establishing an innovative computing environment by providing customers with leading-edge V-NAND SSDs with unrivaled performance."

The Samsung 850 PRO delivers blazing-fast speeds and exceptional endurance, offering the highest level of performance among SSDs using the SATA III (6Gb/s) interface. Its sequential read performance reaches up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s), with write performance of up to 520MB/s. Random read performance is up to 100,000 input/output operations-per-second (IOPS), with write speeds of up to 90,000 IOPS.

The drive also offers a Dynamic Thermal Guard feature, which maintains ambient temperature while operating and prevents potential data loss from overheating. The Samsung 850 PRO will be available in 128 gigabyte (GB), 256GB, 512GB and 1 terabyte (TB) storage capacities. With the accelerating consumer adoption of SSDs, Samsung anticipates that its new V-NAND SSDs will add to the growth of the branded SSD market with its outstanding performance.

According to the April 4, 2014, "Gartner Forecast Analysis: NAND, Worldwide, 1Q14 Update", the global SSD market is expected to rapidly increase from US $11.04 billion in revenues in 2013 to approximately US $14.47 billion in 2014 and US $23.54 billion in 2017.

This is funny. I was just looking at reviews of this drive wondering when it's coming out and see this news.

I hope to get one.

This. Can't wait for a lot more reviews from this SSD. I still haven't upgraded to an SSD and this might be the one to go to!

The reviews say that it's not cheap. And performance is what you can possibly expect from SATA 3. The 840 Evo and MX100 still are on my sights unless something better turns up.

price is a biatch... 1TB of MX100 in Raid (2x 512) is better option than 512gb single 850Pro (cost the same)... but I am looking foward to 850 Evo version - if there will be same tendencies (no penalty in preformance if you take smaller drives - like 128s and 256s) then there will be nice bang for buck raid combo possibilities!

I need to get two of the 1TB SSD's....or at least two 512GB SSD's.....
to replace my two little 128GB SSD's....maybe these will drop the 840's down into my price range LOL

  • 1TB - $699.99 USD ($0.68/GB)

Guys over at Pcper have a review of this already done by the SSD guy. Yea price is higher then some other drive, but comes with a 10 year warranty so would mean Samsung backs this drive for long haul.

Yea but mx100 has only 3 year warranty and as I said above 850pro comes with a 10 year. So that extra long warranty to me is worth the extra $

Ya, awesome endurance, fast drive, but samsung has the best software suite that has everything you need, data migration, trim, benchmarking, all the info you need on the drive, special tweaks for stuff like OP, Rapid Mode, secure erase, even a tool to copy a bootable ISO to USB or disc all built into the software.

Before I got the Samsung EVO I didn't realise how much mucking around I had to do to tweak and secure erase the drive, compared to my other SSDs from OCZ and Intel. Samsung software has everything you need.

Prices will settle...

purchased my 1st SSD also a 840 pro;as i see the new 850 is faster but difference is not so big;the warranty however is double compared to previous series so this is the major benefit for future owners and a guarantee that the drive will last;i'm expecting the same move from intel side ref.warranty...

So, 2TB SSD's for reasonable price aren't that far away. Maybe 2 more years. Then i can throw the HDD out and entirely replace it with SSD for all my storage needs. Then i won't even need hybrid setup anymore.

You can already get 2x1TB SSD's and combine them in one drive letter, it's not like a 2TB will be much cheaper in a few years. HDDs will remain the best option for big storage which normally doesn't really benefit from SSD speeds anyway. You could even put them in a dedicated NAS for the price difference if noise is the problem.

So this is the sucessor to the 840 Pro, no wonder the price is quite high, but it seems it has the performnce to match.

Yeah it's admittedly a bit high, but with that warranty and the quality of Samsung drives I would still probably go that route. That being said, I still have enough ssd space for my use and the speed alone isn't worth the price atm. So hopefully by time I'm ready they will be available cheaper anyway :)

Just a point to note though, the SSD is currently being bottlenecked by current SATA specifications...

10 year warranty seems moot. You're not going to be using the same SSD 10 years from now.

Agreed. Plus the price of Crucial's MX100 is just too good to pass up. A few days ago there was a flash sale for the MX100 512GB for $198.99 on Amazon. With that kind of pricing, Crucial has my business!
