NVIDIA plans to play a "trick" on us all - to compete with ATI's R600 chip, which is hopefully getting closer by the minute, NVIDIA should launch a GeForce 8800 Ultra card. The Inquirer, which we all have a problem trusting now and then, brings shocking news: the 8800 Ultra will be a revamped 8800 GTX card (it will use the same PCB, but a different cooler), and instead of being mass produced, it will be manufactured in "tens of units, not tens of thousands". This should therefore be a swift marketing move: NVIDIA will perhaps be able to claim the crown of performance king, yet us, end users, will not have access to the powerful cards.

It will be difficult to find one card, yet alone two for SLI.

Lol, so it'll be even rarer than the mastercards that were needed for Crossfire setups? Nice... :laugh:
 
A stupid decision on their part.
 
so how will they claim the crown of performance if just a few people will have that card, its like it doesn't exist at all. so don't even mention this card at all, its not there, i don't see it, no... no! it's imaginary! :D
And besides, it will cost thousands if it will be so rare
 
Here is what you do:

Buy an 8800GTX,
Install it
Pretend its an ultra!
 
flarg. thats like cheating....... you can't "release" a card and only manufacture like 10. blargh.
 
Its Nvidia being stupid. I highly doubt they will have the performance crown. No one has a concrete look at the HD 2900XTX card...Nvidia certainly doesn't. Therefore we dont know who will win when R600 comes out. However, this is a stupid move on Nvidia's part driving up prices beyond the means of normal gamin folk.
 
lol Nvidia... rushed out dx10 card, scared of r600 and now trying to trick consumers, damn they suck :p

this is what makes me made that people say that Nvidia rushed there card out when they didnt they are just way ahead of ATI but yea the 8800 is having driver problem i dont think the Ati card is going to be perfect it will have just as many problems if not more
 
Way ahead of ATI by not having any decent drivers? and as for ATI themselves, when they come to release their R600 range they will have decent drivers and by now should have been able to iron out most bugs.

And for the sneaky behaviour to try to get the "crown of performance" Not being able to backup their claim for the masses is a bit sucky being honest. It wouldnt be too hard to make an uber super mega one-off gfx card that will be able to blow everything out of the water if you only have to make a few :laugh:

Obviously it's going to be more than just 10... the original post said it will be "manufactured in tens of units, not tens of thousands", which means that production of the 8800 Ultras will be ultra low :laugh:

I'm guessing the number of units produced is low because they will need to cherry-pick the best of the best cores... just speculation though :)
 
ok one thing we have to remember: the R600 was supposed to come out ages ago.
and theres not gurentee that they will have good drivers, or even that they've ironed out all the kinks. hell, they're already having problems with just basic vista drivers....
all we can do is admit that nvidia as a very decent dx10 offering on the market right now, whereas ati doesn't. it doesn't matter what the r600 might do or is promised to do... it doesn't even exist yet (to the consumer).

well yeah.. but same difference. idc if they manufacture 10 or 10,000, if i can't get my hands on one it'd all be the same.
 
It will, in a couple of weeks in Tunisia (or wherever the release is supposed to be) :D

edit @ radomperson: Well if the 8800 Ultra is just going to be a "revamped GTX", you might as well buy a couple of GTX's and overclock them (and add an aftermarket cooler of course).

hahaha lol yeah, so what is an hd 2900 xtx or woteva its gonna be called gonna be like when thats overclocked? hmm? :p

Edit: actually im kinda curious as to what sort of overclock you would be able to pull on that...
 
tack on an "ultra" or "extreme" or "its-just-like-porn-edition".
 
bowling anyone? The likelihood that you bowl a perfect game at Lumpus Lanes is about the same to buying one of these ultra cards. Whoot!:wtf:
 
Good thing the R600 isn't going to be ultra-rare :p.
 
However, it must be said even tho the 8800 was rushed out a bit, ATI did miss a big opportunity, a mistake on their behalf to get their DX10 stamp firmly printed on the world, lets just hope the wait is well worth it

can some one please explain to me how bringing in a new card and only making 10 of them will affect ATI and make more people buy nvidia instead of ATI ?
 
Sorry, but as with anything on the Inquirer, I'm not believing it until I see it anywhere else XD
