That's perfect. Usually important live streaming events occur when I'm at work. Not this time. Well done for staying in the game for so long, AMD.

Very strange. ATI was founded in 1985. 29 years ago.
Maybe this is indicative of AMD's current state of affairs - a basic inability to count?;) Not an entirely frivolous suggestion after the confusion over the transistor count in Bulldozer.
or...
Maybe some weird averaging out. ATI started out in 1985, and Tseng Labs (which ATI bought out in 1997) was founded in 1983.

Right, but also probably between now and (since this is now a trend) the Q3 date next year where they show new a new gpu (or upcoming product line) to the world. You could say this or those products will represent the 30th year of ATi technologies. It's a darn shame they don't actually mention the company by name though.

I think these events are nice. Just like last year and what they did in Hawaii (9/25/13), it seems like a presser open to everyone on the net...only this time they seemed to let the press have the same experience as everyone else. It gives them an opportunity to also get first-hand coverage for tech unique to them, which helps them control what and how information is conveyed; it also may help it get it off the ground better than being conveyed through the press. Last year it was Hawaii (and 2xx product line), true audio, and Mantle. This year will probably be at least Tonga and 'Freesync.'

While no one has said anything to that effect, it would also be cool if a certain red leather Monroeesque mascot would make an appearance, but granted it might be a little early to trot that out again. That said, if we're talking 30 years of celebrating ATi, it's hard to argue that wouldn't be pretty high up on the nostalgia list.

Hopefully the livestream goes a little smoother this time around.

I'll be disappointed if it's just that. With all the talk at the moment centering around Fiji and Bermuda and the introduction of HBM, it seems like an opportunity lost given that the Nvidia analogues (GM200 and GP100) are starting to gain PR momentum.

Totally agree. I do not think they were prepared for the reception last time. That said, Twitch has a pretty excellent track record.

I hope they show the next high-end chip as well (I want at least one to match a 4k tv), but it's really a toss-up and hard to predict it 'will' happen. Sure, we expect it around the end of the year or so (if it exists and those Synapse slides indeed point to it) , and that is roughly when Hawaii launched, but this is also a month earlier. I think it could go either way...they may spread it out and do another one, who knows. While of course rumors, it seems in the wind that chip will not support HBM/HMC (and personally I think something like 1ghz 3840sp/7ghz mem is more likely), but Huddy does like to talk about that tech coming. Again, totally agree, but it could go either way. The prospect of those things are certainly the most exciting, and why I'll tune in, but given how close this is to Tonga/new freesync-enabled monitors sampling...I just wouldn't expect more than that...maybe 295x (1100/5500 or something?) to compete with 880?

No it wasn't, technically it was actually founded in 1969 and started it's first production (Ram) in 1975, I can only imagine these differing dates are due to the fact the this thread is specifically talking about their "Graphics & Gaming" and not when the company was founded.

ATI was indeed founded in 1985 (as Array Technologies Inc.). I assume you're talking about AMD, which was founded in 1969 (incorporated May 1, 1969 with founding capital target of $1.55m raised June 20, 1969). AMD's first product was actually ROM not RAM - licensed production of Intel's 1702 EPROM chip along with Signetics, MIL and National Semiconductor in 1972-73. Static RAM - licenced copy of Intel's 3101 SRAM chip also debuted in late 1972.

AMD also produced it's first graphics chip in 1987, the Am95C60 QPDM which became somewhat famous along with AMD's Hard Disc Controller for being turned down by Intel as makeweights in the revised cross-license agreement in 1984. AMD to licence the 80186 and 80286 and subsidize royalties with the HDC and QPDM. Intel of course wanted the agreement to fall apart since they'd been strong-armed into it by IBM in February '82 and thought that AMD having to pay full royalties would be a means to an end.

^^^ As the title of this thread is AMD yes I was talking about them and not ATi which was kind of my point in the first place :)

In which case the date is wrong on both counts, since ATI's first graphics product was the Color Emulation Card (found in the Kaypro) and 16800 released late 1985 and mid-1986 respectively....and AMD's own first graphics chip (the Am95C60) was 1987 vintage, which was kind of the point AIB80 and myself were originally pondering upon.
Well since the title specifically mentions Graphics and "Gaming" perhaps the company beleives that it contributed to gaming aside from graphics..... dunno, I would possibly guess that they know what they were doing 30 years ago better than I do.

I think AMD PR needed some sort of theme this year and a 29th anniversary doesn't have the same ring to it that 30th does. The claim is true IF they've decided to celebrate a few months early, which seems to be the case looking at the PR slide. It actually looks like AMD are taking ATI's founding date as a starting point (ATI was founded in August '85) rather than any product, since the Color Emulation Card didn't arrive until the end of the 1985 year.
