Hey Guys

First time building a pc and would like to know what people reckon about this build. Will be mainly used for cad software and gaming.

These are the parts I have chosen so far

CPU: Intel Xeon e3 1231 v3

Motherboard: Msi H97 gaming 3

RAM: 2x4gb Kingston HyperX Fury 1866 DDR3

GPU:Galax GeForce GTX 970 EX OC Black Edition 4gb

SDD: SanDisk Ultra II 240gb

HDD: Seagate 2TB HDD ST2000DM001

Case: NZXT phantom 410 white

Power Supply: EVGA Supernova G2 Gold 750w

Optical Drive: LG GH24NSCO

The Cpu, motherboard and ram are all in a bundle making them cheaper.
Live in Australia and using pccasegear to buy parts.
Don't worry about OS
Current price 1619 AUD
Max spending of about 1700 AUD.

Thanks

The cad work isn't too intensive so I'm thinking 8gb should be fine
The monitor I was just planning to look for after I had everything sorted, thinking about 30 inch monitor or tv that I could use

You could certainly chose a lesser output PSU if your intention was never to add another graphics card.

My setup (Sys Specs at the side) doesnt need its 650w source.... I expect youd do just fine with a quality 450w unit (still allowing a fair amount of headroom) which should save you a few coins making the extra RAM not cost you much, if anything, at all.

I was just getting a psu that I could use for ages (comes with 10yr warranty) with plenty of room to upgrade in the future. If you reckon it's too much what other good psus do you reckon around 600-650w? Would like modularity with it

The ram situation I will just see how 8gb goes first and see if I need more but I doubt it.

If you are fixed on getting everything from that shop, then that build actually is pretty much the best you can get with that budget. Of course you can save some $$ on the case or PSU but you cant buy a better GPU or CPU with that really

I would look for a z97 board over H97
a little bit of overclocking will help the gaming performance
afaik as far as I know h97 doesn't support blkclk straps
a decent z97 board would also give you control of how many cores turbo-up which is a pretty big deal because you could set it for all-cores with the right cooling

Pretty sure boards have it set to all cores anyways. No reason to try and mess around with overclocking a Xeon chip, the gain wont be worth the hassle. Overclocking really isn't necessary for any app these days, at least not the CPU. Most chips turbo to close to 4ghz anyway.

Hi OneMoar
Im not sure but i dont think overclocking capability is worth the extra $120 it will be, especially with a Xeon chip. If i was getting a K cpu I would.
Thanks anyway.

z97 boards can be had for the same price of that h97 board
it would be more like a extra 20 bucks

+24 AUD over the h97 gaming

because if you skimp on the board you are just gonna end up regretting it later
and a K series may not be bad idea for the work you are doing if all you are doing is light-cad then the xeon is likely overkill

Umm i said the board, cpu and ram come as a bundle, this saves me 70 dollars. Then if i add the cost for z97 board gaming 3 equivalent it comes to 120 extra dollars or 100 with the board you choose :/
