AMD's ambitious Radeon Sofware Crimson Edition drivers are seeing its first user experience issue in the form of a fan-speed bug. The driver, in some cases, spins graphics card fans up to 100%, and in others, the fan-speed is locked at 30% regardless of load. Over the past weekend, AMD acknowledged the issue and is tasked with a hotfix driver scheduled for release later today.

Ah... overrated... few funny guys now exploit a possibility to write of their burned hardware... very funny stories. Especially one about the moment it overheats and turns of... actually when that happens the OS shuts down, VRM's are off and the fans spins on max and cools and it a built in firmware level protection. It cannot be borked unless someone powers down the PC completely...

You have to be deaf not hearing your card not working... especially the Hawaii stock blowers. It is a system - shit happens, just as oil leaks - just as in a CAR. You have to be aware of the things running inside your PC. If not... DON'T TOUCH BETA DRIVERS. Simple as that.

Over and out.

Overly dramatic, can be fixed by using the usual tools in the interim.

Anyone who has these "issues" shouldn't be messing around with GPU's as clearly not part of the PC master race.

I've got water, and the fans are controlled by a fan controller. Who wants those loud ass fans working on their own anyway!

A lot of dead cards complains on AMD forums and others. Hilarious readings, lol.

Ouch. This definitely won't help their market share.

Most users don't seem to have encountered the bug though (including me), but it's clear that it has killed a good number of cards. Maybe it's tied to a specific feature.

AMD better replace the dead cards or they're going to get hurt.

I'm also wondering why the cards aren't downclocking or shutting down in time. My old HD 4850 overheated at 115'C probably 20 times during its lifetime and it always just shut itself (and the whole PC) down, it didn't die. It's still powering a PC.

Also, I'm not sure which is worse, cards getting killed or the fanboyism. People even here are defending AMD's serious screw-up with this, and then there's Nvidia fanboys posting 'funny' videos and saying that they have perfect drivers while Nvidia has released drivers with the exact same issue (with similar results) before. Sigh.

How do these cards overheat??? There's an inbuilt safety turn off... Try it, disconnect your fan and run a benchmark/furmark/etc. Not possible.

Who's spreading this FUD?

Not trying to be a fanboy, but I too have trouble understanding how fan speeds would kill the cards. I had a HD7850 to which I forced the fan to 30% and that certinaly throttled and shut down instead of killing itself. Is it the drivers or the firmware that controls when over temp protection sets in, I mean when it seriously overheats?

Guess my card is affected too but with 100% fan speed as soon as I log into windows. I had this before but only when I played around with Overdrive settings. Which warns you about warranty loss and such before you can access it.......

But frying a stock, non hard-modded or overvolted modern GPU with high temps? I call BS.

It's not about the fact that nVidia released a couple of drivers that had the same bug. It's about the fact that Crimson was supposed to be the holy grail of driver releases that would fix all of Catalyst's problems, yet Crimson has numerous issues, and now a potentially hardware-destroying bug.

Also I thought the video was funny, sue me.

Just found out I've been affected by the issue. No biggie. Went to Global overdrive set fan speed back to auto and everything's back to normal. Funny cause I never would've notice until I read that post from reddit. Been playing Crysis 3 even before updating my drivers to Crimson. Temps stays below 70c even with the fan speed locked to 20%.

All the dumbassery and bs claims aside, I will say I reverted back to the older drivers myself.
I honestly dont like the new interface at all, idk how such a big team can design this and this being the end result.
(then again Google fucked up with youtube's redesigns as well and they are even bigger).

But more importantly, I had resets of my overclock, manually having to activate my colour calibration and crashes then I guess the software thought my overclock went too far.
Now I am on a HD6950 GPU so I had to use the beta version and maybe that is less stable etc but man, too much troubles so I went back to the old.

People even here are defending AMD's serious screw-up with this,
No defending the issue as it is a problem depending on how widespread it is. But as for issue, I have not seen it personally on the multiple machines that I know of with AMD parts. My friends 290 machine still speeds up the fans on Crimson, the 7950 CFX machine another has still spins up on crimson, then my friends new Fury machine still spins so I am curious which cards specifically are effected.
and then there's Nvidia fanboys posting 'funny' videos and saying that they have perfect drivers while Nvidia has released drivers with the exact same issue (with similar results) before. Sigh.
Eh that video is trying waaay too hard, its like the revenge some 12 year old Nvidia fanboy been desperately waiting for ever since the same vid was used "against" the GTX970 having 3.5gb "scandal" .
He's just insecure, let him posts videos and such as all he's doing is making himself look like such an extreme fanboy no one will take him seriously.

The only thing I am calling out on is the dead cards...I would like to know how this is happening because cards thermal throttle before they will do any damage. So even if the fans are completely off they will not kill themselves so unless these drivers overwrite that safety feature in some way I can't understand how these cards are dying. I am starting to wonder how many of those claims are real as this seems a bit odd to me. Unfortunately I cannot test my cards that way as they are under liquid, though I may turn my fans off and run through benchmarks repeatedly to see what happens if it hits that range.

Who knows, its a big issue and needs to be fixed asap!

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
I have thermally throttled quite a few cards, and even at a low fan speed the system would lockup and crash well before hardware failure would occur. I have forced cards to do it by holding my hand over the air intake to get the GPU hot so the TIM would melt and set faster, or to make sure a overclock was stable at higher temps and or to see what effect thermals had on the voltage.

I would wager a large percent of the whiny uses with these issues have passively cooled cards and when one person saw the 0 fan speed they freaked out not knowing what was happening in their Dell or whatever.

The new diver package works fine for me, had no issues what so ever. Temps are exactly the same as they allways been.

I just cant the fuss and what its all about, it means absolutely nothing to me.

My two systems appear not two have any issues, definitely not running 100%! Might need to double check if locked at something to low, but as said both playing FO4 and been rock steady.

Software Windows 10 Pro x64
once or twice i have seen the fan controller crash on a gpu, fan ran 100% and only a restart got it down to normal with thermal control.... mybe if you write stupid values to the i2c bus to get voltage control you can get the fan controller to go crazy?

other than the usual stuff (vrm and dry compunt on the die), is it possible that there are still gpu's with no temperature sensor?

Come on thats not possbile, please build powersupplys with no overcurrent protection i want them to go bang!

I played the Witcher 3 for 6 hours until I decided to toggle the OSD after I felt a bead of sweat run down my side near my tower. Holy f*ck my OC'd HD7950s in CFX were at 89'C because the fans were locked in at 20%!!!

My fans were left on Auto, so I tried my own custom fan profile and they still were fixed at 20%!! Thankfully setting a manual static speed in Afterburner works.

Thanks AMD! If my cards die, YOU WILL be hearing from me, and possibly hundreds of others.
