Frankly, AMD stopped producing competitive products in the enthusiast scene, which most of us are a part of.

I hope that changes, but even GPU side the last really high-end competive product that took the crown was the 7970 I think, and it got bought up by bitcoin miners, driving the price through the ceiling so it was an awful deal financially.

Their CPUs currently suck. No other way to put it. There is plenty of Zen hype of course, but we'll see.

Sure there is another way of putting it, : "their CPU's are not as good as what their number 1 competitor offers atm"
There ya go.
Their cpu's dont suck, sucking would mean they are terribly slow or cant do the job they are meant to do, and well, thats simply not the case with their processors, pricing on them is also not at all bad and most people would be absolutely fine with an AMD processor atm.

Ok, I'll confess I was using hyperbole to some extent.. I will grant you your point because it's true. My uncle who's pretty elderly has an AMD laptop (APU) and is perfectly happy with it. I actually recomended it for it's low cost, so yeah, they do have uses... they just don't hold the crown by any means. I just really miss the old AMD I guess.

My guess is that it's "read team only AIB's" (sapphire, XFX ... ) that are pissed .. why would say asus, MSI or gigabyte care ?

True, but could still see how some be pissed still as some people only buy one brand.

MSI and GIGA and ASUS sell both AMD\nVidia so they make sales either way, how ever XFX and Sapphire are AMD only AIB's.

yeah me to, competition is good and we already see Intel aint doing much improvement without it right now.
(it also does not help Intel did that price fixing scheme thing for which they were punished because indeed many people who just use pc's for simple things would be perfectly fine with AMD cpus which would mean a good income for them)
Anyway, I to am hoping for good things with Zen and then people will jump on it as a sign of support if they are going for an update, I currently have an Intel 2600k and its fine but if Zen is good, I just want to jump on it, my inner nerd commands it!.

Doesnt it make you wonder about @btarunr's abilities as a presstitute?

I dont get it, we are falling into nomenclature here more then anything.
We also call a Honda S2000 a performance car, even though it obviously would do poorly against something like a Mclaren P1.
The performance segment is indeed the r9 380 cards, beyond that is what we would call high end. and maybe super high end or something.

I generally consider 200-300$(nvidia x70 & amd r9-x80) gpus to be performance segment gpus. but in last few years nvidia has jacked up prices of gpus in this segement and amd has fallen flat in terms of offering good competing products. I was hoping with new 14nm fab amd will be competitve against nvidia but it alas it seems like all is not well with them.

I'm sure AMD is on the cusp of telling their partners not to worry because the new AMD Radeon R9 490 series based on the revolutionary Hawaii architecture will be there to save the day! Launched several years ago, the GPU was SO ahead of its time, AMD hasn't needed to launch a new GPU architecture. Sure, they could have. They even designed them. But why would they release something that people don't need or want?

So they threw those designs away. They fired all the people that could have designed more. They figured people would prefer to have the older architectures because too much performance could just make them want more in the future.

"Too much is too much," one executive said. "Let's just keep making the same old product for years and years and give the people a change in the name only. It'll help them feel better about the whole thing."

Even as nVidia keeps releasing new architectures and improvements to go with their new branding, AMD stuck to their guns. They knew better than nVidia how to sell some video cards.

"People don't want new products. They just want new names!"

The R9 390(x) tend to do perfectly fine agains the x70 card if I check the benchmarks.

The R9 390(x) tend to do perfectly fine agains the x70 card if I check the benchmarks.
So AMD's second most powerful card (other than the fury) competes against nvidia's fourth highest model. Meanwhile, AMD had no answer for the titan x or 980ti, and the 980 can be OCed easily to outgun the 390x.

AMD has not competed properly in awhile. When your x9x card competes against your opponents x7x card, you've done goofed. AMD needs to start competing again, and polaris is a step in the right direction. Whether or not it will be enough s the question.

How, exactly, is the gap diminishing? AMD continues to loose CPU market-share, they are nonexistent in the server space, they continue to be pushed out of the laptop space. AMD has lost ground constantly for years. They have nothing to compete against the ever-more efficient i series, and they have nothing that can go up against the core m linup either. Not to mention that iris pro is faster then any of AMD's iGPUs. Embarrassingly so.

Where is AMD competing properly against intel? Unless zen is a massive success, AMD CPUs will never compete against intel again.

That still doesnt answer the question of how is the gap diminishing? Zen wont be out until the end of the year at the earliest, assuming AMD doesnt delay it. The earliest the gap between AMD and intel could begin to close performance wise would be Q1 2017, which is almost a year from now.

Right now, the gap is only growing larger. Every month AMD relies on its old chips is another month intel gains market-share. You cant claim the gap is shrinking based on a product that doesnt currently exist on the market. How do you know zen wont turn out to be another bulldozer? AMD made many claims that those chips were much faster than the phenom II chips, and look how that turned out.

yeah you are right since last gen when Amd introduced fury line of gpus to sit on top of gpu stack. before that when r9-290x was on top it was r9-28x which was supposed to offer good value for money.

Ok, and? What does that have to do with the original question of "How, exactly, is the gap diminishing? " or the comment you replied to, which said "you cant claim the gap is diminishing based on a product that does not yet exist"?

Just like bulldozer.....oh wait. And the gap is still getting bigger as we speak, nothing is being done currently to shrink it.

You can't just trust AMD is going to hit it out of the park with zen, not after repeatedly failing with bulldozer. And this is assuming that zen is not delayed at all. AMD has a long history of delaying chips. just look at kaveri, the 45 watt chips came out 10 months late. we still havent seen a new FX chip in years, fury pro duo was delayed to the point of being useless, ece.

That is what you should have said first...

We all HOPE the gap closes, and rumor has it, they will reach Haswell levels. Still behind, but WAY better.. IF it is true. AMD is a hype machine though, so, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I feel TPU.com kind of pissed off by AMD for recent years..
While there could be a story in here somewhere, this is just presented as flaming click bait. It seems btarunr and Editor-In-Chief are playing the game with BS like this, or pissing about not having a Radeon Pro Duo as a "Review" and not an Editorial. While it's nice to have "tabloid journalism" (wccftech/Fudzilla are actually looking more journalistic) this site is about the advertising dollar and not winning any Louis Lyons, or Kiplinger Award.

It's just more cheap BS like what's been on this site over and over. I've consider of walking, however I'd rather not let this use of Bully Pulpit not have some checks and balances.
