What determines when a dedicated GPU is kicking in?
Is it the workload (software controlled) or is it hardware based?
And when the dedicated GPU kicks in - does the IGP totally stops working?
And is there differences AMD CPU v. IGP vs. Intel CPU v. IGP in terms how they work with a dedicated GPU?

Your dedicated GPU should be "kicking in" when you connect your display to it, unless I'm misunderstanding something. Your IGPU ports would be on your mobo.

It's on a laptop, HP ZBook G2, Intel i7-4610M and nVidia Quadro K1100M. I have no external monitor connected. When running CAD applications (2D and 3D) I've noticed differences in performance, but can't determine if it is CPU or GPU related.

Yeah, it's crossed my mind to do just that.
But the thread was also to get a better understanding of the IGPU / dedicated thing

The GPU features Optumus technology .
http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-for-mobile-workstations.html

So , ihe Quadro K1100M can be controlled from NVidia Control Panel . There can be selected which GPU to be used for all and for a certain application . When the 3D of K1100M is used , only the 2D features of the Intel iGPU should be used . DirectX 12 wont help here .

Don't believe DX12 is compatible with the K1100M... but thanks for the sharing

k1100m is a kepler based card, so it should support dx12 just fine.

Only software not hardware . So , I wouldnt rely on K1100M and Intel HD Graphics working together . Anyway .

Huh , huh , my Geforce GT 520mx is listed as DirectX 12 supported , but no way to work together with Intel HD at the same time
