Hi,
I've been trying for more then 6 hours now but can't get my PC to work, I don't know why but I've also lost 1x4gb ram too(thank god it's under warranty)

Here is the problem and how it started:
I booted my pc and resumed a download, suddenly Avast antivirus poped up, claiming that it had updated itself.
Next thing you know, the power went off(electric cut).
After waiting sometime the electricity came back, I booted my pc. This time I gor the option if I want to run a boot scan, so I didn't cancel it.
It went on for around 10mins, I don't remember it exactly but 'Security ID' something was written and then file name.

It then completed and asked for a reboot(by pressing any key).
Everything was going good, window logo came, but then I saw a black screen with my mouse cursor which was working but my keyboard wasn't.
I tried pressing alt ctl del but nothing, shift key more than 5 times but still nothing. Basically my keyboard was useless in the black screen.

These are the things which I've tried till now and none of them worked.
1) All safe modes
2) Every option(I think) in the F8 menu
3) Cleared Cmos
4) Took everything out of mobo, cleaned it and replaced it
*This is when i started getting beeps indicating faulty ram, removed that stick and everything was back to way it was including the black screen
5) Tried changing bios settings, then selected the optimum bios setting option.

Everything works just like it use to except now the black screen comes instead of desktop.
Please help me guys :(

My specs
Gigabyte GA-H61M-S
500gb +140 gb hdd
Nvidia Gt 730 ddr5
Intel i3 3220
450W zebronics psu
From 8gb to now 4gb ram
Window 7 ultimate 64bit

Thanks

if you have only a mouse cursor and nothing else, it makes me wonder if you have two monitor cables connected and the one you're seeing is the 'secondary'.

double check you only have one monitor cable, to one monitor.

If a safe mode works , try to defrag the disk , this could fix some issues . Also might try sfc /scannow command to repair Windows .

In safe mode too, nothing works except the mouse cursor

in that case, sounds like explorer.exe cant load (effectively, your desktop)

see if ctrl-alt-del opens task manager, if so try and run explorer.exe from the windows folder.

otherwise, as little cat said - you need to repair or reinstall windows.

Run a Linux version from a dvd or usb stick and see if you can recover some of you data. Then, try your repair or re-install.

That Ctrl+Alt+Del saved my life once ! I had a black screen too

i had a PC with vista (i know, i know) decide windows wasnt activated and locked me out of the system, effectively keeping my homework from me.
I used internet explorer (to go online and activate windows) to 'download' and open explorer.exe so i could get back into the system... that trick has saved a bunch of broken systems from being formatted.

What are the system specs?(could help filling them out in your profile) Have you tried booting the system without the gpu installed?Your graphics drivers could be corrupted. I had a similar problem once when booting up a system and had to default to onboard graphics to get the system up and running before I could get the gpu to initialize properly.

You might want to get another Power Supply and test... if it went... it could have taken some other parts with it, too.
Just saying you may want to test with another known good source.

Zebronics SMPS Review and Why to Avoid them?
Well i had that feeling somewhere in my heart, that its the PSU's fault.
Tomorrow when ill go to get the ram stick changed, ill also ask them to check the psu out.

But the computer is working fine, i mean bios and stuff, the psu is not affecting this...
Is there a way to be sure if its the psu's fault

Sorry if i sound confusing :D

Guys, I thought it over and it could be the PSU.
I'm definitely taking it for a check tomorrow, one thing which I'd like to know is.
Should I attempt to repair my windows with the installation disk before getting the PSU tested.

Or should I attempt any window repair/installation after getting the PSU tested ?

It s clear the PSU is not great and it would be nice to be changed . At your own risk , could try Windows repair

Edit : As far as I remember there was a F key at Windows 7 startup which triggered Windows repair procedure without any DVD , just from the hdd (at least on my laptop)

If your PSU was the issue your PC would die(shutdown) or not boot at all. So that's definetly not the case. If you can't open task manager, try to get a Windows installation disk and checking the disk for errors with "chkdsk" command in the command prompt (you can find it in the installation disk). The best thing to do would be:

1. Get a Linux Recovery Disk.
2. From the Linux Recovery Disk, make a small partition (20 GB) on one of the drives where you have free space.
3. Insert a Windows disk and install a new copy of Windows on that partition.
4. If the computer boots normally, you should find all your previous files on one of the partitions listed in Explorer.
