VIA to Unveil its Latest SSD Controllers at FMS 2016

VIA Technologies, Inc, today announced that it be will demonstrating its latest VIA NVMe PCIe Gen III & SATA III SSD controllers in Booth#818 of the 2016 Flash Memory Summit being held from August 9th to 11th in the Santa Clara Convention Center, California, USA. Featuring the VIA LDPC PLUS ECC decoding engine with Gear-Shifting technology, the second generation VIA SSD controllers offer best-in-class error correction capability and ensure high-throughput performance without overheating issues.

Just out of curiosity who uses VIA controllers? As far as I can see Samsung uses their own and rest of the manufacturers seem to be happy with Marvel controllers.

Personally, I think China can use the controller to do SSD design based on existing NAND and china NAND product.

That's probably why VIA decided to make one. Maybe someday it will obliterate Phison?

No-one, yet, seemingly, at least not that I'm aware of.

There has been a massive consolidation of SSD controller manufacturers so the only three left are pretty much Silicon Motion, Phison (who's now in legal trouble in Taiwan for dodgy trading) and Marvell, at least as far as products that anyone can buy.

This is also most likely why Realtek and Maxiotek launched product at Computex this year, as the market needs more players.

Indilinx was bought out by OCZ some time ago (now Toshiba), SandForce was bought by Avago and then sold to Seagate, LAMD (Link A Media Devices) was bought by SK Hynix and so on...

SanDisk and Samsung make their own controllers and it looks like JMicron has stopped, although the rumour is that Maxiotek is JMicron.

So yes, we need new players, as the SSD controller is also a fair share of the cost of an SSD. That said, let's hope VIA does a better job with this than they've done with some past products, especially in terms of firmware support.
