Someone with access to a Core i7-7700K "Kaby Lake" processor and an ASRock Z270-Extreme4 motherboard put the chip through SiSoft SANDRA 2015 CPU tests. Engineering sample or not, the clock speeds of the chip appear to check out with those of the lineup as we know it. The core ticks at 4.20 GHz, with a maximum Turbo Boost frequency of 4.50 GHz. You also get 8 MB of L3 cache, and HyperThreading. The benchmark confirms that Intel is working on a new platform refresh chipset, with the Z270 chipset succeeding the existing Z170. Existing LGA1151 could support the new chips, with BIOS updates.

At its stock speeds, the i7-7700K churns out a SANDRA 2015 "Processor Arithmetic" score of 151.94 GOPS. Its "Processor Multimedia" score yielded is 379.8 Mpix/s. To put things in perspective, a Core i7-6700K "Skylake" processor running at its stock speed of 4.00 GHz core with 4.20 GHz Turbo Boost typically yields 140.88 GOPS in "Processor Arithmetic" and 353.8 Mpix/s in "Processor Multimedia" tests, according to LegitReviews. Intel is expected to launch the 7th generation Core processor family, alongside the 200 series chipset, later this year. Kaby Lake is Intel's third CPU micro-architecture for the 14 nm process, after "Skylake" and "Broadwell."

So same performance as the skylake. Just clock speed bump thats about the only performance increase I notice.

New chipset already and Z170 was released what, last year? That's just stupid. Apparently it's so crap it needs replacing already. Makes you wonder if Z270 isn't the exact same crap that'll get replaced next year...

This.

intel at its best... hope it is last "new" gen intel can pull this (full stagnation) off.

Your rather angry posts towards anything nvidia or Intel as of late is quite amusing tbh.

We can only hope that AMD Zen is competitive enough to light a fire under Intels ass. Until then, intel is competing with themselves. They dont need to release mind blowing increases in cpu performance to do so.

They've had new platforms every year for many years now. 2600(P67) > 3770(Z77) > 4770(Z87) > 4790(Z97) > 6700(Z170)... five mainstream CPUs and chipsets, and the 2600K and P67 launched 5 years ago (2011). That also doesn't include all the HDET chips, the SNB-E, IVB-E, Haswell_E and Broadwell-E. So technically, it's two new CPU designs per year, not one.

First year of CPU life, the new CPUs are generally less than 5% of all CPUs Intel produces that year.

Because they are lazy fuckers that's why. There is no way of putting this in a better worded form. Then again there is also partial blame on AMD because they are dragging their shit to the market so slowly they basically encourage competitors to be lazy because they simply can be...

Also, I own both, Intel and NVIDIA. Must be AMD fanboy, right?

Yeah, it is terrible when someone is right!

Stating the obvious and complaining
its stupid? Like cadaveca said they have had new CPUs and chipsets to go with each new CPU line up release. Nothing has changed. And why should it? Software hasnt gotten very far to warrant any huge break throughs in cpu performance, and Intel has zero competition. Intel could literally sit on Skylake for a few years, but they have to do something to keep the investors happy.

Lol, having an opinion of my own is now trolling. I guess I just trolled you as well. XD

I am still good with my old Sandy :peace:

What can you expect, only non-K CPUs gain in performance each year because frequency on K CPUs is overclockable. There is even going to be 4 core xxxxU CPU in Kaby Lake. So the real question is should Intel releases "upgraded" K CPUs every year?

If Intel had any competition the fate for K CPUs would be the same but other non-K CPUs would get higher frequency raise than they do currently annually.

So Kaby Lake is factory OC'd Skylake. No surprises from intel there :D

7.85% more GFLOPS
7.35% more Mpix/s
5.00% higher clockspeed

So, in terms of IPC, Kaby Lake is only 2.35-2.85% faster than Skylake which begs the question, "why does Kaby Lake exist?" There's no doubt in my mind that Intel could sell a Skylake 6750K with 4.2 GHz clock speed defeating the purpose of introducing another architecture.

I hope that Kabylake non-K OC will still available.

ommmm ommmm, o pardon me guys, just getting all Zen over here

Makes me feel good about my purchase this month (I couldn't wait for kaby lake and got a skylake).

Just going to bump my clock speed a bit and I'll have the same performance :-)

You beat me to it, I was just thinking how small the performance percentage increase was.

Still a lot more new stuff, than AMD showed in last 5 years.

Well, AMD has released a bunch of new stuff in the last five years.... just not much of it has caught on, nor has it performed very well. Fury X is finally starting to shine though, over a year later.

"why does Kaby Lake exist?"
They want to introduce new features like native HEVC 10 bit decoding and don't want to update drivers for Skylake, something going on with Microsoft since it will only fully support Kaby Lake on Windows 10? I don't get it myself, it's weird.

Well it is just a optimized Skylake, not a new arch so not much to expect from it. And Cannon Lake will be just a die shrink of this for 10nm? I guess OEMs will be happy though since they can market pcs and laptops with new product numbers. Maybe these new parts OC better though. Can spend my money on other stuff when there is no need to upgrade my PC every year!

....pc market as a whole is in a holding pattern....nothing on the mass consumer side to push it..so wouldn't expect much. Maybe V.R. , Augmented reality or whatever comes next can give it a nice jolt. Otherwise kaby lake, Zen, Volta etc will be more of the same. But being a business......ya gotta drop bread crumbs continually to keep your customers interested......
