Hi guys,

Recently I've decided that I'm going to be upgrading my PC. As a result, I have put together a build based on a small amount of research that I have done and I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me some advice; whether there are better alternatives for similar prices, if something is unessecary or if something is bottlenecking etc.

I plan on using the PC for gaming. I have 3 monitors and play games such as CSGO, WoW, Paragon, and less so games like Farcry and Skyrim. I plan on overclocking both the CPU and GPU's.

I understand that the build is very overkill, although I have saved around $6500 over the past few years and so that is my price point.

Thanks in advance:toast:

EDIT: I forgot to link the build! Sorry about that: https://www.ple.com.au/ViewWishlist.aspx?WishlistGuid=8456e606-d5d8-49ef-9887-5ca1fc671c8b
EDIT 2: I should also note, all of the watercooling parts I have chosen probably don't match, I just chucked them in there so I could get a rough idea of price.

You dont need to spend more then $3k.

After a point, you get diminishing returns on every extra dollar.

For example for broadwell-e you get:

6 cores for $600
8 cores for $1000
10 cores for $1800

Would it not be an upgrade for gaming? I was told it would be and am genuinely curious.

I'm also not just upgrading for the increase in power, but also because I've been having a lot of issues with the MOBO/RAM that I've not been able to resolve. For example, my MOBO won't run my 2400MHz Ram at anything above 1333 MHz without blue screening. I also am not able to overclock my CPU higher than 3.7GHz otherwise it crashes (at seemingly any voltage). These aren't the only issues though.

Just go V7 xeon's with TITAN XP

Wouldn't a 6700k be better for gaming though?

Go big or go home eh?

Overall you are spending alot on the water cooling which will look cool but might not help much with overclocking.

Also, why dont you switch the SSD out for a m.2 drive? Its much faster for only $100 more.

https://www.ple.com.au/Products/621086/Samsung-950-Pro-Series-512GB-M2-SSD

I actually didn't know about m.2 drives, thanks for the suggestion :)

As for the water cooling, I figure it won't do much more for me than a regular aftermarket cooler, but I'm also doing it for the aesthetics ;)

the yes the 6700k has faster single core clocks. the 4930 has more cores. which is more important to you. do you use any apps that utilize all 6 cores?

but based on what you said i'd probably be looking for a better motherboard for the 4930 rather than replacing the whole system around a 6700.

but if you wanna drop a buncha moneys, I'm never one to stop that. so about your build:

(edit: had a buncha of stuff to say but then I realized you were in Australia so pricing was waaaay off.)

the 3k+ dominators and the asus rog alpha don't play well together ( at least without fiddling around with the power a bunch just to get it to post with all 4 sticks).
i'd recommend the corsair lpx 2800 or gskill ripjaw 2800 kits. both run natively at 1.2V and can overclock past that pretty well and are on the certified list from asus.

the alpha is a nice board. if you have more than 1 computer in the room you'd be better off with a hero and a wireless bridge.

the power supply is at least 200W past being overkill. even at the point of being unstable my rog strix 1080 doesn't pull 150W. and if you're pushing 200W through that CPU its probly melted.

Technically maybe but really ether will make no difference with benchmarks. I thinking with that kind of money your spending you might as well go Broadwell E and drop all the custom water cooling

I don't do anything that would require 6 cores; no editing/rendering etc. I mainly just game a lot, sometimes while watching netflix/youtube or multiple twitch streams at the same time. I doubt even that requires six cores though, would it?

Ahh that's good to know, thanks. Is this the corsair RAM you are referring to?: https://www.ple.com.au/Products/624...4x8GB-DDR4-Vengeance-C16-Red-LED-135V-3466MHz

So you think 800w would suffice, even after watercooling?

What I would like to do is overclock the 6700k as much as possible. My understanding was that as the vast majority of games won't utilise 6 cores, you want to go for clock speed for a gaming build. Is that true?

Thanks :)

That's true but games don't utilize hyper threading ether. So you could go i5 6600k

specifically this kit http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengea...00mhz-c14-memory-kit-black-cmk32gx4m4b2800c14. or this kit http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f4-2800c15q-32gvr

or whatever is available that is close to those.

the pump you listed is rated for 2x23W. so yeah everything in that system would be hard pressed to pull 600w. 800 will still give plenty of leeway.
so 150W per 1080 ( and they'll be boiling your coolant)
160w for the cpu
50W for pump.
~100 slack for drives and MB and fans
the evga 850 they sell would be perfect. take the $160 you save and buy a coupla games and some beer.

most current games are clock speed driven. dx12 is supposed to help us get away from that. cant answer that for you.

the biggest advantage of the 6700k setup is you get a fresh start on the current socket. sourcing a 2011v1 board is getting harder.

That's true but games don't utilize hyper threading ether. So you could go i5 6600k

true. but the i5 would be a step down from the 4930k. basically the same clocks with less cores and no HT. with the 6700k he's getting faster clocks. for the loss of cores.

no, its easier to get a big ass video card and also still with your rig, for example add a couple of GTX 1080 on an Sli

The only cpus that are a real "upgrade" here are 5820k, 5930k, 6800k, 5960x, 6900k and 6950x, everything else is the same or a downgrade. 6 cores GET utilised in games more and more, basically if you thought 6 cores are not worth it for games you're too late, because it starts to matter now. The only option you have, get a better 6 core or 8/10 core and on actual cpu deactivate HTT, it helps with minimum fps + overclock it to minimum 4.5ghz. Saying all this, I'd say don't change the cpu and platform, upgrade the rest it's a far better investment.
If you have too much money laying around buy a Titan X P or 2x GTX 1080 for sli. If you don't like sli the answer is obvious. Buy a nice tempered glass case and a ultra wide gsync monitor and enjoy.

Actually a 6900K and 6950X will be the unique update for the current rig, the other mentioned processors are you going to bring like 15% to 25% improvement over the rig, while the 6900K and the 6950X will be one step beyond, but still pointless to upgrade such a big ass proccesor for gaming, its better to move on on a big ass case or bigger watercooler and better video cards,

For gaming, just get 6600k and OC it a little to match 6700k speed. No need to overthink it.

I looked over your build forgot to do it at first.

Everything okay besides cpu etc. Use the current system, upgrade to 16gb+ if you don't have that much already. Move it to the new tower and overclock it (more). Don't buy extremely expensive ram it's not worth it (no perf increase after 3000 speed in games). I don't see much worth in a 200 bucks psu too, but you must know where to waste your money. I'd rather buy 1-2x titan xp and waterblock(s) than a lot you selected that's basically just a waste, like the overly expensive ram and psu. Sli is a thing that doesn't always work properly, don't forget that, so the way to go is maybe one titan XP.

I don't think 3 monitors is really good for gaming besides racing and flight simulators maybe. As I said better a ultra wide screen then with gsync (asus/acer).

If you still strictly want to upgrade cpu etc. then go for a 6 core at least, not much sense going for a 4 Core in a enthusiast system. I7 6800k or 6850k then. More cores than 6 not really worth it for gaming.

Don't forget to upgrade mouse/keyboard etc. If you want the best those are important too.

Having looked at OP's system spec, I got a question in my mind.

Does he really need to upgrade? Maybe GPU but everything else seems fine to me.

Not even, 780ti in SLI is more than enough for anything. (not being argumentative)

It's not just about GPU grunt there's the 3 GB VRAM limitation with the 780 Ti which is going to limit the highest quality settings in a handful of games. Texture pack add ons and mods too. If it were me though I would stick with the pair of 780 Ti until the 1080 Ti and Vega 10 show up and go with a single card of those.

Yeah, kinda forgot that fact. Been a while since I actually saw a 780ti.
