Hello,
Just a quick advice on purchasing an SSD for my old Dell XPS M1710 laptop, which only has SATA I interfaces.

First of all, just to be sure, are the latest SATA III drives compatible with the SATA I ports? My guess is yes, however they will be reduced to SATA I speeds, which is fine, if I buy the cheapest SSD on the market now that have a write rate at ~150MB/s (same as SATA I).

However if I buy a faster drive, will I see any performance improvements over a cheaper/weaker one?

Thanks in advance.

Buy the best you can afford. SSD speed holds in small operations. 750 evo I guess.

The real issue in long term should be garbage collection and lack of AHCI.

I've installed a Pentium 3 on i815 on a SSD... well... it should work fine.

Dont go with high sizes too.

Thanks for the replay. Just curious, why isn't a good idea to go with a high size? I was planing to go for a 1TB drive since I can only have 1 drive installed...

BIOS limitations. You must ensure it is capable of seeing such drive.

Also there are loads of incompatibilty with older things... like BSODs...

Be careful with that.

You should be fine with any drive under 2TB since that laptop uses the intel 945+ICH7 chipsets. The biggest issue is that some laptop's sata plugs dont provide +12v line so make sure the new drive doesnt need it.

No SSD uses +12V...

Honestly I would try using that Evo 840 inside for few days and take the new 1TB drive in the main rig meanwhile dumping out that useless velociraptor.

Notice it uses both the 5v and the 12v lines.

It will use only ONE. This product is half server breed not consumer thus the 12V line. It will use only 12V if both voltages are are present, 5V only if 5V are present.

You Sir are incorrect, it needs both voltages.(edited, see below for clarification) Whats next? Are you gunna tell me that all laptops actually provide 12v on the sata connections? I'ld have a harder time proving that....

I guess you cannot accept truth that it is an enterprise drive, not for laptops.

http://www.storagereview.com/intel_ssd_730_series_review

In our tests, we measure idle power consumption from the Intel SSD 730 at 1.18W in 5v mode while hitting 1.44 in 12v mode. During sequential write and read activity it scored 4.76W 5v (5.00 12v) and 2.46W (2.76W 12v) respectively.

It should be noted that when the Intel SSD 730 drive sees both 5V and 12V rails active on the connector, it defaults to the 12V rail going back to its enterprise roots. Additionally, as the above results show, these drives are not designed for systems where low power or long battery life is a priority; it is specifically intended for use in high performance systems. This can be seen as a negative aspect though compared to other high-performance SSD options which also integrate very well into power-friendly environments. For example the Intel SSD 730 draws 4.5 times the power at idle than the same capacity Samsung SSD 840 Pro. It also draws more power at idle than a 2.5" 7,200RPM 1TB hard drive.

This was my whole point to the OP, some laptops cant use some SSD even though they will physically fit.

The review on Anandtech says:
anandtech said:
the SSD 730 needs so much power that it draws current from the 12V rail
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7803/intel-ssd-730-480gb-review

But either way you did claim that no SSD uses 12v.....
No SSD uses +12V...

Then later....
It will use only 12V if both voltages are are present, 5V only if 5V are present.

I checked the white paper for this drive. You are incorrect. The drive uses 12v. If 12v is not available it can use the 5v line but the tolerance at the drive required is >5% which some laptops cant provide.

Just admit that you are rowing in the wrong direction and wasting breath.

The 730th is the SSD that actually does use both rails, all further intel consumer SSD's work as I said, they accept 12V line and fall back to it.

You can bring up more enterprise server exclusions, including custom made and you may surprise us all.

Consumer SSD drives ANNO 2016 doesn't use +12V. ONLY ENTERPRISE DOES. Hey, maybe we should bring back some legacy stuff using -12V and -5V and also brag about it.

Thanks all for the info. Yeah, I can test with my 840, but only to see if is detectable by bios. My concern is, not sure how is going to perform with Windows XP installed on...

If she wishes, whatever it is a legacy device, drivers prolly are problematic for newer OS'es except linux. 840EVO has garbage colection, after idling it should clean up the drive in order to be fast again it isn't as good as TRIM, but albeit it is...

But yeah... real time experiment will be the best here.

You shouldn't be installing XP anymore...
Damn right that's like putting a 350 Chevy small block on a moped

Or $2000 rims on a $400 car

Isn't there a 1.8 GB RAM restriction on XP too?
@OP upgrade if at all possible

No, it's like using an operating system for a PC from 2001 in 2016.

And the answer is no, there isn't. I do believe you have to enable TRIM manually though, you might even have to install something. I don't remember though.

And i prefer my analogy, much more colorful.

U dont like vista!!? ;)

Dude..... You know how awesome it would be to have a SBC on a moped... I would be riding that bitch everywhere.
Part of me was thinking that as I was typing it . It reminds me,, on the way to my old job there was a Mazda Miata with a 302 5.0liter mustang engine apparently what they did was kick the firewall back towards the driver another one or 2 feet and remove the rear seat so the driver seat and the passenger seat could slide back it was a beast from what I heard. I actually stopped and wanted to ask the owner but I couldn't get anyone to answer the door

but i digress, that is WAY off topic, Sorry @OP, i will STFU now.

Dude..... You know how awesome it would be to have a SBC on a moped... I would be riding that bitch everywhere.

I met a guy who did that when he was a kid. The frame on the moped did not last a long while.

Actually the miata was designed for a V-6 but ford never decided to do it so a SBF or SBC will fit without any modifications. monstermiata makes a full bolt on kit.
