QNAP Systems, Inc. today announced the TS-831X - a new cost-effective 8-bay business NAS with a quad-core 1.70 GHz CPU to provide users with enhanced system performance for daily business operations. Alongside the standard models with 8 GB or 16 GB RAM, there is also a model with 4 GB RAM (TS-831X-4G) to provide an affordable option for budget-conscious users.

"The TS-831X features a highly-competitive specification, including built-in 10GbE ports, containerized apps, and SSD caching, making it a favorable choice for small and medium-sized organizations," said Jason Hsu, Product Manager of QNAP, adding "The TS-831X-4G option provides an accessible choice for budget-constrained organizations to benefit from the TS-831X's amazing functionalities without breaking the bank."

The new TS-831X uses an AnnapurnaLabs, an Amazon company Alpine AL-314 quad-core 1.7 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processor, and features 4GB/8GB/16GB DDR3 RAM (upgradable to 16GB), hardware-accelerated encryption, and SSD caching. It also includes two built-in 10GbE SFP+ ports for high-speed network deployment and a PCIe expansion slot for installing an additional 10GbE or 1GbE network adapter if needed.

Container Station allows users to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) apps for additional business opportunities, and the VJBOD function allows for using unused space to expand the storage capacity of other QNAP NAS units. The 8-bay TS-831X can also meet growing storage demands by using QNAP 8-bay expansion enclosures to scale up to 24 drives. All these features and more provide everything needed for growing businesses looking for backup, restoration, private cloud, and to future-proof their IT infrastructure.

  • TS-831X-4G: 4GB DDR3 RAM (4GB x1)

If the TS-831X-16G is $999 and the TS-831X-8G is $799, then perhaps the TS-831X-4G will be $699? (Using MSRP, prices may vary at stores/sales)

Compatible 8GB x 2 kits are under $100 so this will probably become the popular model out of the three.

Who the hell wants a NAS based on a ARM CPU? Not me. This is the reason I built my own NAS/ESXI server based on an Intel Xeon-D CPU with 8 cores, 16 threads, in a similar form factor case (U-NAS nsc-800).
