I had the same dilemma. I went with the R9 Fury Nitro and I've been very happy with this "little" monster. At 1440p the Fury Nitro is an excellent choice over the GTX1060 as it is faster and the 4GB of RAM are still quite sufficient. At 1080p it is faster, but by a smaller amount (the Fury really scales with resolution, widening the performance gap as the resolution rises).

Put it this way my 290x can match (give or take) a 1060 as its on par with a 480 and the Fury is probably 10-20% faster than a 290x
