How do you guys deal with the "upgrade itch?"

Well, the itch is only a problem when you have just enough money to actually afford it, but not enough that it really makes sense to be throwing it into computer components. If you don't have the money, it's not really an itch, it's just dreaming. Sort of like dreaming about McLaren P1. It can't be an "itch" because you know you just can't afford it either way.

When I was tight for money I would never buy the latest. I was constantly 2 or 3 generation behind everyone else. Nothing depreciates faster than Tech parts. The object is to let the other guy take the hit and buy their old stuff. So you need friends that know more than you and have money. Offer to work for free at your local PC shop for parts.

That's a wise way. One downside of it is that you won't get to display epeen that way. :p

Well I usualy ask myself if I really need that upgrade and if I get it how will it be better than the thing I have now.
There are a series of questions I ask myself and if the most of the answers are no then the upgrade is a no GO.
Questions like.
Do I need that upgrade? Yes or no
If I get that upgrade what do I expect from it? Better performance or ?????
Can my current PC do everything I need it to do? Yes or no
Do I deserve to get that upgrade? Yes or no
.........and so on,
but usally I convince myself not to go for it, since my PC does what I want it to.

Yeah I ran two and three generation old videocards, whatever I could get for $50 or so, for the longest time while I was in college and I thought it was good to get atleast 30 FPS for 1280x1024 low settings on Battlefield 2, that meant it was kind of sort of playable.

Even now I am generally happy if things run higher than 30fps. 60fps+ would be ideal but doesn't always happen.

That's exactly what I'm doing since 2013. It all started when I wanted to get another HD 5850 to do crossfire, because the sole HD 5850 was too slow for BF4. Then I got a HD 5970 instead, but I had to replace my Phenom II as well because it was simply too slow for that game. In the end, half of my essential system now is used parts (mb+cpu+gpu), the other half is bought new, because I had the money to afford it once again. Once you're low on money, but you still want great stuff, you're bound to buy good used hardware, it's a great way to "survive" and stay up-to-date for the newest games.

I've given myself an allowance. I spend it or I move it to my PayPal account for next month's goodies. (or to wait for sale prices)
