Any particular goal?

I'd grab Oracle Virtual Box or VMware Workstation Player as a step one. Both free and both geared for running an OS instead of another OS. With a Linux or Windows ISO file, you'll be up in no time on a system like yours.

YouTube Hyper-V windows 8 or 10, they both can use.the same version Microsoft Windows Server does, for free. Install it, install a copy of windows, and mess around. Try other virtualization options as well...they all handle VMs a little differently.

I also failed to detail the above with OSes Hyper-V versions. Windows 8 and Server 2012 (8.1 and 2012 R2) have the same version of Hyper-V, while Windows 10 and Server 2016 use the newer version of Hyper-V. I use both versions regularly, and even split VM's between them at times.

I focus on Hyper-V because I work at a Microsoft shop and have a Microsoft lab at home, but there are some pitfalls with Hyper-V depending on how to plan to use/deploy it. I won't get into those right now but I will say that it's a great virtualization platform now and I enjoy managing and working with it. I have my home server (see sys specs) running anywhere between 8-12VM's. Including some test Win 7, 8.1, and 10 VM's, several 2012 R2 VM's for domain controller, DNS, DHCP, file server, print server, Plex server, virtual PFSense router, MineOS VM that hosts 4 of my son's Minecraft servers.

Woooo lots of stuff to look at.

I've used VMWare before and I do like it, but not Hyper V yet. (Actually had 7 instances of VMWare at once before)

I think I'm also looking for stuff i haven't learned yet. I'll look at these goodiess when i get off work.
