Computer Game Publisher Electronic Arts announced a couple of days ago that they will bring six games to the Intel-based Macintosh platform starting in July. At this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, EA co-founder Bing Gordon told the audience that "Need for Speed: Carbon" ; "Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars" ; "Battlefield 2142" ; "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" ; "Madden NFL '08" and "Tiger Woods PGA Tour '08" will all make their way to Mac.

While EA has had games for Mac in years past, this is the first time since Mac OS X that EA will be releasing the games themselves.

Transgaming's 'Cider' technology will enable Window's games to work on Intel-based Macs.

First the success of the Simpsons brings about the Fox News propaganda channel..
And now the success of the iPod is funding a company that shouldn't still be here.

wonder if this will actually spur on other companies to release game for the mac, and if they do, will it possibly make the mac a viable gaming platform?

I guess it would be nice, but with the current Core2 Macs, Boot Camp and Windows kinda overshadow the idea a bit.

Aspyr has released a bunch of popular titles on the Mac in the past, tho.

Better late than never I suppose, but these will have been out on PC for quite a while before they get released on Mac. Still, as long as it doesn't bump up the price then I don't mind, good to give consumers more choice... and Macs something worth having

Lol Mac users just have to live in the past and pretend they are new releases to the world o_O. And PCs users can pretend they live in the future. Everything will be good then and SkyNet wont have to destroy the world.

If anyones curious, they had john carmack @ WWDC demo'ing a new technology ID's been working on...

EA is a pile of crap. Granted, it would bring a lot of money into that side of the the fence, ID software's where its at imo.

All their games are native, and done right the first time.

And play splendidly. Even doom 3 PPC version runs great on my intel mac.

I dont see why more games arent developed for the MAC. Most Macs are great for graphics and rendering. I would assume it would be great for games.

It's about revenue, not audience/hardware.

Way more many people have non-Mac computers. They compare the potential sales versus the time and money it'd cost to tweak games to be Mac-compatible.

Macs getting games only furthurs the misconception that macs are actually useful. They are just Windows without most of the stuff u want.

Just one question thought - how are u going to run Battefield 2142 and Command & Conquer 3 without DirectX or any of the other things that Windows offers but Mac OS doesn't?

Do Macs have OpenGL or some equivalent? It might require a fair bit of extra programming, but I'm sure it's possible. It would be nice to see PC and Mac 2142 players being able to play on the same servers, but I expect differences in game design could create problems there.

hmph.

It seems to me that Macs don't have the best video cards for gaming. I always pictured the Mac to have something of an FX type card inside, but we'll see.

I personally don't like the fact that just because I want an OS, I have to buy a whole computer (which by the way is quite expensive compared to the hardware/price ratio of a PC w/ equiv. specs) If Apple could aim for their future version of software to be compatible on AMD and various other platforms, I may just go out and pirate buy that OS.

Macs have always had fairly powerful CPUs, wich are good for that kind of graphics and render that you say, proffesional ones, but for gaming you need to do the graphics fast, in the graphics card, and there is usually the performance hole in macs. Their cards aren't that fast.

Yea, the highest graphics solution Apple offers is a X1900XT, and that's in their Mac Pro version... and the cheapest way to get that is to pay 3,000 bucks. Most of their computers have either Intel 950, X1600, 7300GT, or (maybe) a 7600GT. And the real kicker is the only way to have a 7300GT or 7600GT, is you have to buy the 24-inch iMac version. So having either one of those cards power a 1920x1200 resolution in gaming is wishful thinking. However, even though they won't be able to truly play the games well, Apple offers better graphics solutions overall than most PC manufacturers do from the get-go. But, then again, you've gotta pay a premium for it.

You could always buy a cheaper system and upgrade the graphics card yourself I presume - as long as their is driver support?

I'm not sure what the situation is with EFI and mac video cards.

I'm pretty sure the 20" imac has a the MXM slot from Nvidia.

There are actually just about as many mac games as pc games, they are just "seperated" to placed where those that are looking to buy the games HAVE a mac, instead of forcing them down the average idiot gamers throat at best buy.

Theres normally a performance defecit because 90% of developers PORT their application, instead of design it on the system.

Photoshop. Native app. Competes with windows. Faster in some, Slower in others.

Hell, doom 3 running in Rosetta is pretty damn fast.

If developers begin to use Cider and/or program more nativly to the mac rather than spending 2 hours porting the app over stupidly, Mac apps are just as fast if not faster than windows apps.

Plus you get less DLL hassle with drivers and windows .net bullcrap.

And Bret, thank you for proving how little you know about the subject.

The mac video cards are same as a PC's except the old ones just had an Open firmware, bios instead of a normal "Bios". I'm not sure what they changed with EFI yet.

Apple contains OS X to apple hardware to avoid the many problems windows runs into- Oh lookie, windows 64 bit doesn't work with that chipset? Too bad sucker. No sound drivers available for vista? Sucks to be you.

OS X isn't intended to be an OS like windows is, its aimed at completeing the mac package. Its like brakes on a porsche. Why don't they fit on my Escort? Because its made to fit the "package" that is a porsche. :)

You could always buy a cheaper system and upgrade the graphics card yourself I presume - as long as their is driver support?

Any Mac video card available has driver support.

thats the "cool" factor of the apple.

Everything that is designed for it, works. No questions asked.

I can't wait for the day when Macs are so popular people will actually bother programming viruses for them.

The only time Windows screws up is when a user has been surfing for so much warez and porn that their computer is crapped up with spyware and viruses.

If you are smart about it and have the right blocking tools your Windows machine will never crash.

I don't hate the Mac OS but the interface is either really easy or really hard, eg if you want to configure anything of significance you have to go into terminal because the Gui just doesn't provide you any semi advance options, only the dumb down basic options

Any Mac video card available has driver support.

thats the "cool" factor of the apple.

Everything that is designed for it, works. No questions asked.
