Thats an excerpt of an article over at wccftech (sorry) , question is wtf is that chip an i7 7700k in a laptop at 2.8ghz , who the what and the why would anyone buy a K in a laptop that cant even be ran at its normal speed , that's if it even is an i7 7700k

I didn't know this was a thing so what gives , its not doing 4.5 never mind 5Ghz surely.

Ok they are laptop CPU's and they are always slower clocked compared to their counterparts desktop CPU's, thats normal.

Ok they are laptop CPU's and they are always slower clocked compared to their counterparts desktop CPU's, thats normal.

Fine with this, its the 7700k error ,that would be pointless running it at 2.8 with no possibility to oc, paying for a name in the extreme but Mobile chips ,carry on.
I should have guessed it a typo.

THey can OC but its a bit limited due to the cooling system. there are some manufacturers out there who do have options in the Bios to OC on higher tier gaming laptops.

It's common that both CPUs and GPUs used in laptops are clocked lower than their desktop equivalents. It has mostly to do with laptops not being able to handle heat as well. The reason the 7700k in particular is clocked quite a bit lower in laptops is it's a a fairly hot CPU to begin with.

IMO gaming laptops aren't worth it, unless you have money to burn and can afford the very high end ones with liquid cooling attachments.

Bro i don't know if you get me , it's not a k , it wont clock like a k its a Mobile chip ,they made it sound like a K on a laptop.
That's no desktop replacement laptop and anyone who bought it would not expect 5ghz.
Now if they were selling a downclocked actual i7 in a poorly cooled laptop well then i would have more to say.
I am not new to pcs mate it's the specific details of that article that sounded barmy.

The only problem i had was a typo ,i doubt you read post 2 where it was pointed out as a typo but beyond that my theories about laptops are unimportant i only own a little one for surfing.
Im not as tense about stuff as you imagine , likely just not as good as i could be at explaining stuff but if you are fine with the selling of for example an i7 7700k clocked at 2.8 in a normal laptop design that might clock a bit but couldn't get to its normal clock speed on desktop then ,on that we definitely dissagree ,but it doesn't matter anyway because it didn't happen so ,guns back in holsters ,im chilled your chilled its sunday and we both might well face our own real pain tomorrow.

you are missing the point.. the 7700K chip is a better binned chip.. it will clock higher than the none K chip.. but it will also run at any given speed at a lower voltage than the none K chip..

heat and voltage is what its all about in a laptop.. it makes all the sense in the world to run a chip that will run on a lower voltage at any given speed..

its two sides of the same story.. the chip that will clock higher is also the chip that will run cooler at slower speeds.. the 7700K makes an ideal mobile chip when its run slower..

i dont think i said that mobile chips are not binned for efficiency.. i was intending to say it all comes down to the same thing.. the 7700K chip is or could be a mobile chip.. it all comes down to the speed and voltage its run at.. or more correctly the market its aimed at..

I am not buying a 7700k in a laptop for sure.

A 90w TDP CPU will not work well in a laptop in my experience unless it's one of those desktop replacement laptops that has like 3 inch thickness at which point you might just as well build a desktop.

A mobile 7700 is rated at 45w TDP and it's still hard to cool that thing.
