Why is it such a big deal that they decided to use torx
It's not a "big" deal - especially for those with a full complement of tools handy. But for the first time or occasional builder who just wants to try their hand at a self-build, I think it sad, after years and years of only needing a simple #2 Phillips, they suddenly have to go out and buy a tool they may never use anywhere else.

That sounds like a silly notebook "propriety" thing to me, not a PC/ATX "industry standard" :) thing. Now if AMD included the correct torx driver with their CPUs that used this socket (like Fractal Design does with their little motherboard standoff tool that comes with their cases :)), I would be okay with this.

nope sure isnt, didnt say it was "a reason".
Ummm, actually you did.
There is bunch of other reasons too, inlcuding slightly higher costs.
People want to up post counts, so they chimed in.

We'll answer me this

What first time builder is going to buy TR, a $700+ CPU and not have a $1 torx set

Loosen the screw, open the lid, slide the CPU, close the lid, tighten the screw. Simple enough

Now I'm waiting if somehow people still manage to bend some of them 4000+ pins

What do you mean "manage"? Someone will of course do it, it's bound to happen, as someone will have the urge to stroke the socket pins, much in the same way you stroke a pet hedgehog and there's your bent pins...

Oh and courtesy of MSI not having the heatsink on the chipset, you can tell that the X399 is identical to the X370 chipset, which is kind of disappointing...

:) Is it True you improve the CPU performance if you polish those gold contact pins before Inserting the CPUo_O:laugh::roll:

I know Norton said to drop the torx vs phillips discussion, and I'm not trying to bring that back up, I just wanted to put out the information that it appears that all the ThreadRipper CPUs come with the torx tool needed to open and close the CPU socket.

To add to that- it is a torque limited tool to prevent over/under tightening of the fittings

Indeed, or so it seems:

Another "Linus moment" ...

To add to that- it is a torque limited tool to prevent over/under tightening of the fittings

I noticed that in one of the unboxing videos i watched: to me, that is by far better then the tool offering itself.

I know those torque torx tools are not cheap to make. I'd guess $5-$10.

That is the part I'm not clear on. I don't know if it is torque limited, so once you hit a certain torque it will spin and not let you tighten it any more. Or if it is like a click type torque wrench, where it clicks when you hit the certain torque, but if you keep turning it will over torque the screw.

When you tighten it down the tool will not let you over torque, it will just click around..

Ummm, sorry but that is not true at all. Torx screws are designed to NOT slip! That is one of the arguments for using torx instead of cross-tip/Phillips. A Phillips screwdriver can slip out of the screw head and then dig a trench through a couple dozen circuit traces across the motherboard. A torx screw and torx driver almost lock into place so they cannot slip out, or round out the screw head.

There may be Torx drivers built with a torque limiting slip mechanisms but I have never seen one, I would assume they are much more expensive than standard Torx screwdrivers, like this one or this one as examples, which clearly do not slip when a certain torque threshold is breached.

Watch an unboxing or install video, then go ahead and disagree with me. The wrench supplied in the box has a torque limit mechanism built in.

The more i look at the way amd designed their socket the more impressed with it i become.

in regards to the cpu do you guys think their will be a way to enable some of those locked down cores like in the old days? im almost thinking there will be some way to do so and it does seem like amd makes extra cash from people getting hyped up about extra features so they go out and purchase a setup to try it out. examples: rx400-500 series bios mods, phenom, r9-290 to r9-290x, and even flashing upto the r9-390 my point is i think that amd has an ace up their sleeve with thread ripper. if you can get people buying a $700+ cpu in the quantitys of say an i5 or i7 then people begin to pay attention to you more.

No.
It could be (theoretically) possible to upgrade a CPU remotely (for money, that is), but that would mean TR to be artificially limited (with perfectly fine, disabled cores). That is quite unlikely.
You can google for some Ryzen hacking. I'm pretty sure someone has already tried to turn a Ryzen 5 into a Ryzen 7.

A $700+ CPU will never sell in quantities of mainstream products like i5. The whole TR4 platform won't even be visible in AMD's financial statements - it's such a tiny niche.
In a way this is just a flagship product. It doesn't have to be profitable on its own. It only has to attract customers to the lineup. Threadripper clearly succeeds in that.

I did, again and sorry, but I see nothing to suggest (1) that is the wrench supplied by AMD (or MSI or whoever) or (2) that it is torque limiting. If you have a link to an AMD (or MSI) or TR4 socket data sheet that shows the torque requirements for that socket, I sure would be interested in viewing it. I have a mini-torque wrench set with Torx bits, but I have nothing showing what the torque specs are for that socket or those screws.

No.
It could be (theoretically) possible to upgrade a CPU remotely (for money, that is), but that would mean TR to be artificially limited (with perfectly fine, disabled cores). That is quite unlikely.
You can google for some Ryzen hacking. I'm pretty sure someone has already tried to turn a Ryzen 5 into a Ryzen 7.

when i talk about unlocking cores im refering to this http://www.cpu-world.com/info/AMD/Unlocking_cores_and_L3.html its well documented and i even had a phenom i did this to at one point.
Threadripper does have disabled cores on the die. how they were disabled and if the mobo/chipset can read them if accessible in the first place is really what im talking about.

edit: dont take my response the wrong way, im really not trying to be rude just tryng to clarify my point.

Intel once went that way with a paid firmware upgrade Soon dropped that :)
7 years ago. Totally different times.
People got used to paid upgrades, micro payments and so on. This would be OK today, maybe even praised by reviewers and customers.

I know very well what you're talking about. It's still a "no".

This would NOT B ok with me, thats the same as having hidden fees at a bank. Its trickery of the worst kind, if you dont get everything upfront you have to think what else are they cheating you on, its like bait and switch scams.

You get an information upfront that an upgrade is possible. It saves them cost (less hardware variants offered) and it gives you flexibility. How is this bad?

What do you think about upgrading Windows? Or game extensions? Or software licenses?
