Here are the first pictures of the retail boxes of 8th generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The first wave of processors based on Intel's new 14 nm "Coffee Lake" silicon will be 6-core parts in the Core i5 and Core i7 brands, which will be launched on 22 August; with Core i3 following on much later in the year, or even early-2018. The boxes confirm several things about these chips, beginning with the fact that their integrated graphics cores will be branded "Intel UHD Graphics 6xx," and that they will require motherboards based on Intel 300-series chipset, even though their socket is "LGA1151."

There doesn't appear to be a socket key difference between these processors and "Kaby Lake," so it's possible that while 300-series chipset motherboards support older "Kaby Lake" and "Skylake" processors, "Coffee Lake" will only work on 300-series chipset, and not older 200-series or 100-series. Intel making the bold move of branding its new integrated graphics "UHD" could hint at its credentials with hardware-accelerated decoding of new video formats such as 10-bit VP9 at 4K without breaking a sweat; and new display connector standards such as HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4. The various models that make up the first wave of 8th generation Core i5 and Core i7 desktop processors, are tabled below.

Hold it for a second. Can someone invert the colors? I think this is so bad, it would actally look better inverted

You need to take more drugs, then it'll look just fine :D

Here it is inverted:

Buying this now makes no sense unless you are hopelessly in need. It would be the same as buying Linfield and not waiting for Sandy bridge.

But, but... you get more cores...

Why? I think that for once Intel actually has a great i7 lineup. In fact, I think I'm interested in a 8700k. Skylake-x is basically a rat rod and threadripper only works in older games when half its cores are disabled, so I'm going to end up buying a mainstream cpu and a fast 6-core is more interesting to me then a slower 8-core like a 1700@4ghz. The gap is just a bit too big for me to buy ryzen at the moment and I can't wait for zen2 since I want a new pc in september. Intel just about deserves a break with their corecount increases, even though soldered dies would be nice.

paper launch?

I do like this, I guess it's something new. But would I upgrade to it? Nope.

I wonder what was wrong with the old design. Like the one my 3570K came with.

While I am glad INTEL is a step forward and introducing 6 cores for mainstream users but Coffee LAKE is merely a place holder. Most of us want Cannon/ICELAKE. At this rate we are going to have 400 series chipset in 2018.

Suppose I could always sell the 8700k and mobo and get a cheap (possibly even free due to tax breaks) upgrade to cannon lake.

Wish I could say the same. I on the other am a collector and when new hardware arrives, old one goes right in it's original packing.

I was looking at the 7820x as my next upgrade maybe early next year but i have a lot of interest in the 8700K. I just want a good matx mobo that the skylake-x still does not have up for sale.

looks like a feminine product .
who wouldve thought, a 6 core i5....huh.

these box colors please. its bad enough the x299 case badges look like garbage.

That i5-8400 looks gimped as hell, worse clocks than a Ryzen 5.

When they say that there is a boost clock of 4.3 GHz on the 8700k how long can the chip sustain that clock speed?

Depends on your cooler. With a good 240mm AIO in normal circumstances probably forever.
