The X399 Designare EX, to which we were privy to a sneak peek already, stands to be Gigabyte's flagship X399 motherboard for AMD's Threadripper platform. Gigabyte, however, seem to have taken a little too much inspiration from their own AORUS X399 Gaming 7, since even the PCB color has been appropriated form that board. Changes are mostly aesthetic: black heatsinks have turned silver, with some added bluish bling that would make any Halo fan smile, and the backplate has a premium feel to it. Overall, I quite like the design accents in this board, though again, this seems to be a case of a slight redressing of an already existing product - with an accompanying increase to its price-tag. If the AORUS Gaming 7 retails for $389, you should see this one crossing the $400 threshold easily.

I dont get this statement, The Aorus G7 has A Creative labs onboard sound card and Killer nic ... these tend to bring up the cost of MB... the Designare EX has none of this. Not sure why is going too be crossing the $400.00 so easy.

No 10gb ethernet? Seriously? Really liking the asrock professional gamer x399 mobo. 10gb Ethernet plus dual gigabit Ethernet ftw.

if one could install windows.7 on this mobo, there would definitely be a need for a legacy (ps2) kbd or mouse , during the initial phases of the setup process.

Perhaps, but I've installed W7 on about 75 machines using usb. Kb & rodents... nevernottaproblemo....

Not sure about the logic of buying top of the line hardware and then wanting to saddle it with outdated software, but that's your decision

Why so?
Z270 Gaming 7 is 240$ while the Designare is 150$.
Some designare boards are lacking compering to their Aorus relatives

I believe the EX nomenclature puts it up there, no?

it is missing 10GbE... hmm...does have dual nics, backplate and wifi which 7 does not...

EX is basically there for being on the HEDT platforms, like much the X99 one, i believe.
That said. There are no clear rules on where this should go. This one seems to be based on a 95%+ design of an Aorus X399 gaming 7 though

I think this is a valid point. It is damn near 2018 and 10GE still isn't being taken serious for consumers. It definitely has a place on a "premium" motherboard like this.

99% of users in the US can't reach Gigabit speeds... 10 GbE is a luxury at this point... though I agree it should have it. :)

I am solely interested in it for LAN purposes. I would love to be able to significantly boost transfer speeds.

Who cares about US customers? ;-) All of Europe has blazing internet speeds and net neutrality. 10GbE is still a bit unpopular but the demand is there.

I for one could easily saturate 10GbE with my home NAS.

Yes, for LAN that would be good. I can see that use. Nobody here is demanding 10 GbE, when 1 GbE isn't close to being a norm. Average around the States is 60 Mbps...

How inexpensive can you get a 10 GbE NAS box???

Looking at the price of 10gb Ethernet pcie cards, it's basically cheaper to get the asrock over this, then you don't have to give up apcie slot

A lot of extreme oc'ers use ps/2 ports due to usb becoming unstable at higher clocks.

And some users even still use ps/2 for full n-key rollover, myself included.

Who cares about US customers? ;-)

The manufacturer, I would assume.

Hardware in Europe is expensive, contrary to the US. We envy you openly for that. We typically pay 20% on top of your worst prices.

On your question - I don't settle for cheap. I currently rock a 4-bay Qnap. No HDDs included and it still set me back what you'd call 650 bucks.

Thats my point. Few people pay that much for a 10 GbE NAS. Very few will miss the feature...or buy a board with it. ;)

The problem, for me at least, is that these boards are aimed toward the 'very few'. When someone saw the BOM w/ 10GbE card, they simply decided to cheap it out.

Considering it is heavily based on the gaming 7, it may not have ever been on the BOM.

Take the bling out, now what would be the point of this board? Pure moneygrab?

I'm not really disagreeing. Mind you the gaming 7 is probably a decent board, but this is pretty lackluster to ask a premium for.
