Big ol' air cooling

So I'm currently running a Kraken X60 on my 4790k and I feel like moving back to air cooling for maybe better temps and overall better airflow in the case. I have a bigger budget than when I got my Deepcool Lucifer if that says anything and I'm mainly looking for performance. I don't mind getting a couple high airflow fans as long as they don't scream at me.

Any suggestions, good people of Teepeeyuu?


EDIT: I'm anal on colors for fans after my uber blue ram sticks out so badly, sooooo maybe black/red or blue fans would work. Also not into the RGB spree.

I don't know how you think you'll get markedly better temps with an air cooler versus your 280 MM AIO. If you really want lower temps, IMHO, you're going to have to go to the next level and go to a custom loop. EKWB and others have nice complete kits to help take the guess work out of the first time. Probably not very much on the CPU, maybe slightly quieter but I doubt it will be any cooler, probably a tad hotter if anything. But a D15 is about as good as any air cooler and should be enough for a 4790k.

You may get better airflow through the case, with the radiator out of the way (depending on the set up of course).

Personally, I'd go with the Assassin II over the D15. Performance will be very close between the two and the Assassin is $33 less expensive. Not to mention my original Assassin has been doing a great job at cooling my OC'ed 3930k that crunches whenever it is booted up.

I've got a Noctua NH-U14S on my i7 4770k and it does just fine 62c @ 4.4GHz full load. It's usually better than that but everything is pretty well dog haired over.

Corsair LED ML 120's are quiet unless you poke the beast and then they become loud, but from personal experience the ML fans are the best of the best and look the best outa the best for a win win all around.. noctua blows IMHO as I have a few and the ML kicks their ass big time..

Keeps shit cool and moves a lot of air in a case VS the light brown over dark brown fans

I checked some of the coolers and I'm not sure of the triple fan towers show a significant better performance difference than the dual fan towers. I would stick three fans on the D15 if I go for it.


Also pretty sure my 1080ti is too tall for that last cooler.

3 fans probably wont make much difference. Also you gonna have a hard time mounting the 3rd fan. As noctua does not hand out fan clips for d15 anymore.

Another thing is the d15 fans are special a15 fans that goes up to 1500rpm. You gonna need a similar rpm one, as their retail a15 only goes to 1200rpm.

Have you looked at Thermalright Grand Macho RT? Pretty decent as well

These old classic coolers may perform better with a single 140mm or 160mm fan for lower noise. I tested an old classic "all copper" heatsink lapping it first then using liquid metal compound. You be surprised, the performance is there, with some of todays modern coolers.

Make sure you get a heatsink that has a lot of heatpipes, seems to make a big difference. Some of these manufacturers have low quality control with bad heatpipe to base connection or bad heatpipe to fin connection. I don't think that is a problem with Noctua, they are supposed to be pretty good with that. I think a lot of the older heatsinks don't have enough heatpipes, I think that heatpipes have really improved a lot in the past couple generations.

As far as Triple Fan vs Dual Fan vs Single Fan I found that my PHTC12DX worked better with a single powerful fan rather than two powerful fans or two weak stock fans. It actually ran hotter with two powerful matched fans versus a single fan. So experiment with whatever you get, might be surprised at result.

Many of the fans that come with these things are sub par, especially phanteks. Replacing the fans on my 12DX made a big difference. I am running a single H100i's SP120L PWM fan, works well. Fan behind it on the case exhaust is a Delta EFB1212VH triple blade pwm monster, basically acts as second heatsink pull fan. Hell, just run the 12cm Deltas and throw away whatever fans you get. If you want 14cm get the Yate Loon D14BH-12 PWM, that thing is a beast too.
