A lot of external drives, even if powered externally, will not power on and spin the drive up unless the computer is turned on. But I'm not sure if this particular drive does that or not.

One thing to keep in mind WD has a habit of using a custom pbc so if you're thinking of breaking it open and taking the drive out, I'm not sure this will work

I never really cared too much for Best Buy, but I certainly was pissed to see they closed down my local store. It was a nice place to have when you ran out of thermal paste, them & RadioShack I guess. Plus you never get those super desperate sales like you do with brick-and-mortar stores who want to move inventory.

I've had great luck with their cyber Monday sales, free shipping or pickup and most was available online when others make you stand in line on Thurs morning. Other than that, PC component selection in the store is kinda half assed.

Just delivered.

Still in the enclosure at the moment so I don't know the exact model drive yet, but a transfer of a 10GB file puts it near the sequential performance of a current-gen Red.

Power via cable might be possible because of the USB 3.0 Micro-B port, but it didn't work when I connected it to my home server, an A88X/FM2+ box. Might try it later on my H170 system to see if I have any compatible ports.
