European Commission investigating HD-DVD and Blu-Ray

Or, to be specific, the EC is investigating why movie studios chose to back either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. This investigation is to ensure that there are no monopolies or any other shenanigans going on with either format.

HD-DVD is mainly being promoted by Toshiba, with help from movie studios Universal, Warner and Paramount. The last two also support Blu-Ray. Sony and 20th Century Fox only release HD content via Blu-Ray, and several other studios support Blu-Ray. There is no clear winner in the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war at this point.

Im guessing the EC needs a reason to spend millions of euros on something, so they chose this. I dont care if anyone agrees or not, but this is just plain stupid. We have two formats because two different conglomerates couldnt resolve their issues and come with one new format. Just the earlier DVD wars, this will probably pan out the same.

If all movies were released on both formats, there would be some serious price competition since both formats are pretty much equal quality. Many Blu-Ray and HD DVDs cost $35 fucking dollars because you can't get it on the other format. We need someone to investigate this crap because competition is ultimately best for consumer.

Sony could be accused as all the film studios they own are only making films in the Blu-ray format and since they are joint patent holder of the format that could be seen as an abuse.

ohhh thanks for clearing that up, i didn't read the article well enough apparently, but i can see why they used so much DRM, but anyways, there are now ways around it
