I myself never used Winamp - I was a Windows Media Player kind of guy back then, yeah - but I'm well aware of its cult status among users of that times' PC's. The app's latest official version was released back in 2013, but a new version (release 5.8) will hit the scene soon - at first, with bug fixes and removal of Pro features for a more cohesive package.

Radionomy, the company that purchased Winamp back in 2014, has announced via its CEO, Alexandre Saboundjian, that "There will be a completely new version next year, with the legacy of Winamp but a more complete listening experience." This means eventual added support for modern features that have become quintessential to our consumption of audio media, such as playlists, podcasts, streaming radio stations, and others. The new release is pegged for a 2019 launch, though details are scarce in the fields for now.

I'll give it a try when they release it. But it's unlikely that I will part with Foobar2000.

As above, I use aimp on android. It's about the only one where u can line up anything in your playlist easily, similiar to the original winamp on pc (2.95 version etc). The android version of winamp is a travesty, as it's nothing like the original pc version.

I still use winamp on pc :) All music arranged neatly in directories :) Just add a directory, or individual mixes/songs. or any songs you want to listen too with a ctrl select method :)

I still use Winamp as well. It's always just worked and had a nice clean and simple UI.

I still use Winamp today. Version 2.81 is actually the best one -- no resource usage (low anyway) and no tacked on unnecessary features (like video). Trust me, I've studied this a lot -- get 2.81 and enjoy.

I use version 5.63 which is the best version before a few things were changed that were less the good.

Smack it!!

I haven't used WinAmp since before I built the last (current) box. Just didn't play a lot of music thru the PC anymore. These days, once every month or so, I'll run something thru the PC that's just music, and use BS player or VLC, and all my audio books are on the ipod for the drive time. Still, excellent to see its return! I hope they don't try to do away with, or even worse, monetize, the skinning abilities.

WinAmp was appearance oriented, you had to use addon to get real usage out of it. Some builds broken addons constantly and made it unstable at other times. I've used a lot of players but only a couple actually had decent file/song management. I have been using MusicBee for the last decade.

Time to hoard the last, least "feature" filled version of it i guess.

updates like these usually just end up in bloat with bloat and 3rd party bloat for that bloat

10 years ago, I was a hardcore audiophile. I had an Auzen X-meridean and X-Fi XtremeGamer Pro, and Windows XP allowed DirectSound HW, which I still believe is the best audio output setup ever made. Winamp was my player of choice because it had such a vibrant input/output plugin community.

Then Microsoft became tone-deaf, scrapped DirectSound HW, and Azalia CODECs got better enough to scream "120 dBA SNR" on their spec-sheets which I still believe is a scam compared to decent 110 dBA SNR sound cards from the 2000s.

I'm not sure Winamp can survive unless it's interlinked with a streaming service like Apple Music or Spotify. If I was Jeff Bezos, I'd sneeze a few coins to buy out Winamp and mate it with Prime Music. I'd then even save on licensing costs by encoding my music in exotic formats like Vorbis. I'd let Winamp community flourish, and add to its IoT functionality.

Probably the only way to make it worthwhile (monetize) is partnering with streaming services.

I'm curious how many ads I'd see when just drawing from my own MP3s. Not to mention the sound processing quality

Back in the day when you downloaded on WinMX then created a playlist in Winamp. FYI, Spider Player is the best clutter free audio player, it's pretty much like old Winamp.

Damn you both! I wanted to make the first llama joke!:toast:

I've still got an old 512MB IDE drive in a drawer that has a library of horrible music and a Winamp.exe on it, bet that little bastard still works too. It's also a double-height 3.5"!
