It seems that Microsoft is on a patent spree lately..After already filing two patents in the past month another patent filed by Microsoft just surfaced , this one however is for an "advertising framework" that uses "context data" from your computer's hard drive to pop up advertisements and "apportion and credit advertising revenue" to ad suppliers in real time.
"Applications, tools, or utilities may use an application program interface to report context data tags such as key words or other information that may be used to target advertisements. The advertising framework may host several components for receiving and processing the context data, refining the data, requesting advertisements from an advertising supplier, for receiving and forwarding advertisements to a display client for presentation, and for providing data back to the advertising supplier."

Damn....if this happens I'm getting people together and suing MS....that's just plain sad. We have to pay 100 + dollars for their os and then they plan to throw adverts on it without our consent, it's not like some companies that do pop-ups...they may not be in the US. MS on the other hand is in the land of the sued...

This is plain dumb. If they want their OS to be ad-supported, they should give it us free.

the funny part is i bet it would be 100% bug free now if they could only manage to make an os that was bug free so i didn't need 500 windows updates

This is saddening. Good for Linux though. Bad for people who don't know how to use Linux.

lol....only us people that are too lazy to find the other versions (or too lazy to play with them). actually...i use to use a pirated version of xp...till ms disabled it (auto updates is not a good thing for certain versions). ..

If they do do this, Microsoft may very well have a huge lawsuit on their hands.

If the patent is approved i dont think they can sue them....

Well, I feel like boycotts all around will happen.
Dell is already offering Ubuntu on certain computers, so it's not like the average joe will have to work hard to get Linux instead.

Although, if they use this for people with non-legit versions of Windows, it will either piss them off enough to buy a legit copy, or piss them off enough to just install Linux (or of course, made a way to bypass it, heheh).
