Obsidian Entertainment, which was recently acquired by Microsoft in its efforts to bolster its first-party studios, has announced a new video game set for release in 2019. Titled "The Outer Worlds", it's a first-person RPG with a focus on single-player and story - it seems more Fallout than Fallout, really, which should come as a surprise to virtually no-one: this is the game studio that developed Fallout: New Vegas and that still holds the talent of some of that franchises' early creators.

The game seems to be striking a balance between Fallout and Borderlands, both in the art and setting department and overall design. If so, this could be an interesting take on the genre, though we'd hope for either a really strong storyline or some innovative mechanics to set itself apart from other offerings that are crowding this particular strata of the gaming world: Borderlands, Rage, Fallout, and now Far Cry New Dawn are all exploring stretches of this setting. We'll be here to look at what a current-gen Fallout game might be without the Creation Engine - and multiplayer focus like Fallout 76.

well maybe with a different engine this game will have far less bugs and will potentially be easier to mod than Fallout 4

Nothing is easier to mod than Bethesda's games. It's the next best thing, outside of just having an engine and being a coder yourself. And Obsidian isn't known for being friendly to mods. Only New Vegas was... and that's because it's Bethesda's engine too.

FO3, FNV and Skyrim were easy to mod
FO4 is a bit trickier than the earlier three
just talk to some of the mod authors on Nexus

The new cinematic stuff is beyond me (I don't know anyone who has taken advantage of it), but all of the usual "tables" you can tweak in the CK for items, environments, and NPCs are all there.

Looks nice, I want it. I just hope performance won't be an issue. *cough* New Vegas*cough*

They did a damned good job with New Vegas. What performance issues there were came about from having to use Bethesda’s engine.

This won’t have that handicap.

Fallout 3 ran much much better than NV at launch though, it wasn't just an engine issue. Who says they know how to use the current one? :)

;) I think time has jaded your memory a bit. Do you not remember the huge problems Fallout 3 had at launch? Half the people couldn’t even get it to start, and those that did had major bugs and performance problems.

It’s ok, nostalgia does that to us with lots of old games. :)

I would still rather have a great game that runs like crap than a crap game that runs great.

Bethesda games are tweaked to run best in a vanilla state. The minute you do anything to them though, it's like a shaky house of cards. All of the performance tweaks out there are mainly to alleviate that, but not the vanilla game as much.

In the case of NV, I imagine that the engine was more geared towards FO3, and since NV was sort of a total overhaul sized mod (if you will), it was bound to run into issues.

Perhaps the problem is that I was playing on an Xbox 360 and was too young to understand "FPS", "frame-pacing" etc. :D
I remember playing Red Dead Redemption and it felt weird at times, re-played it a while back and understood it just ran like shit.

Nice rose colored glasses. You probably forgot.

Cool, looking forward to The Outer Worlds.

No, really, I started it up on day 1 because I pre-ordered (still have my bobble head and lunchbox) and went right through the game.

What probably happened is that I took the 100% expected path through the game, which was the only path tested :)

Eh..... I dunno, it looks too much like a hash up of other games, I'll keep my eye on it but not enough to make any speculation yet.

Could be good. I'll have to keep my eye on it and see how things turn out once it is released.

This has nothing to do with Bethesda at all.
Will unlikely be able to mod it.

Nice this looks to be really great I remember that I enjoyed FO3 soo much because it was the first, first-person FO every didn't really buy much NV doe because I kinda never fell into it in the same way as FO3.

I am surprised that you think FO NV has performance issue.
Have you played Fallout 4?
That game is atrociously buggy compared to earlier FO games that even a somewhat decent rig with the gtx 1080 is not able to keep constant 60fps at 1080p.
While I was able to run FONV with mods smoothly on a crappy pc with Sandy Bridge Pentium (2cores no HT), 8gb ram and ATI HD 6750 1gb

whats worse is that they kept using that crappy engine with the new FO76
and we all know how that turned out

NV had performance issues, F3 ran great on my machine while NV was more or less unplayable.
