If you just started playing Devil May Cry 5, which was released today, and wonder why you can hear sound effects and music, but no voices in the cutscenes, then use the following easy fix.

Set your Speaker Output Configuration in Windows to "Stereo". For some reason it defaults to "5.1 Surround" on many systems, including mine.

Fully step by step guide below.

Press Windows+R to open the "Run" dialog and enter "mmsys.cpl"

You should now see the window above, which lists all your sound devices (the actual list may vary of course).

Right click on the entry with the green checkmark ("Speakers, High Definition Audio Device" in my case), and select "Configure Speakers".

This opens the "Speaker Setup" window, where you can change the configuration to "Stereo".

Click "Next", "Next", "Finish" to close the dialog and save your changes. Close the "Sound" window, too, and start Devil May Cry 5. You'll now hear the missing voice acting correctly.

How long did you spend figuring it out? It's like my Netflix issue with my Yamaha receiver. Some sound, some music, no voice.

Are you using surround with center channel? Voices often go through center only. Check the wires from that channel.

Edit: that's probably why the voice is also missing in this game when it defaults to 5.1, it sends voice to center speaker, which is not in the setup?

I remember I had the same problem with FFXV, and I had to do the same thing to get it fixed.

I've never seen this default to 5.1 on a system, always stereo

I take it this mini guide is only for those using 2.0/2.1 speakers / headphones and not those of use who actually use 5.1+ surround systems

Correct, its a long standing issue that crops up every few months on the forums, where someone with a stereo setup gets set to 5.1 (upmixing software/settings?) turns off the upmixing, and suddenly has missing audio channels for all non-stereo sources

Could just as easily have right-clicked the speaker settings in the notification tray and hit "Playback devices." No need to use the run window. That's just convoluted.

It's a guaranteed way to get to the same place. With the variety of system and software configurations, who knows what people have modded on their systems that change the sound icon. Using the run command guarantees people are going to get there.

I do have a center channel and wiring is fine, the issue was only with Netflix. I believe it has to do with the bitrate.

This isn't working for me. I have my headphones plugged in the USB port and when I do open the settings, I can only see "Stereo" as it should be. But the in game audio still seems to be working as if it's 5.1
