With an increasing number of "gamers on the go" today, we are getting more gaming products tailored specifically to them. Laptops, portable keyboards, and even portable monitors. Often those monitors aren't very good. They either lack quality or are too small to do anything serious with them. However, ASUS wanted to change that with their launch of a new ROG portable monitor.

At Computex, ASUS has announced a new addition to its portable monitor family, this time under their famous ROG branding. The new ROG Strix XG17, as it is called, appears to be a dream come true for every gamer on the go. It features a 1080p 240 Hz display packed in a 17-inch body made to fit in any bag that is able to carry a 17-inch laptop. It incorporates adaptive sync technology so you will not have to worry about torn frames. The response time is pretty low as well at only 3 ms. You can drive it from any micro HDMI or USB-C DisplayPort cable. It can be powered from the same USB-C DisplayPort cable you use for video, or from the internal battery which is able to handle up to three hours of usage on its own. No information yet on retain availability or pricing, but we look forward to checking it out more sooner than later.

Wow IPS,240hz and 3ms... I don't think there's even a same spec normal gaming monitor like that..

Who are these gamers on the go?

this is very, very nice, but also completely useless.

Remember the days when Sony sold a small screen you could plug into the back of your PS1??

Pepperidge farm remembers....

On a side note. If they ever made a budget 60hz version of those ROG monitors - Id be down for getting one. Ive always been looking on amazon for things like that but either they are stupidly expensive or not reliable.

Good question... only group that comes to mind are professional e-sports teams when traveling.

I used to travel for work and this would have been great for me. A 14" laptop plus this was my dream back then.

I'm certainly in the market for one of these. I've been looking into building a DIY portable FreeSync 15" monitor, but have held off given the effort required to not make it gargantuan. If this is priced nicely, it would be pretty much perfect. 17" is a bit large, but I could live with it.

There is a whole niche dedicated to SFF who would love this myself included.
Yeah, I'm definitely in need of a portable monitor to go with my portable gaming rig - going to bring that on quite a few work trips in the coming years. Don't think I'm the only one.

Not really. :/
Teams spend time at:
Events that are fully equipped
Practice rooms before tournaments that are also fully equipped
Gaming house that is also fully equipped

Not sure how this makes sense but cool tech overall.

Yeah, maybe in between events on the road, dunno

I like that.
Need some experienced opinion.
Who tried already?
...nobody, given that it's not on sale yet? Given that it doesn't have a price, I'd be surprised if this arrived within the coming months - though I might of course be wrong. It's not included in any of their press releases either, so they're likely gauging audience response before launching this. I wouldn't be surprised if a prototype made its way to some youtubers or something in the meantime, though, as that's becoming an ever more common way of drumming up enthusiasm for upcoming products.

From the specs .. seems designed by the marketing department. With all the phony marketing specs, I have simple way oif determining what's worth looking at ... if it's not on TFT Central, it doesn't matter.

Again: no price, not mentioned in press releases, clearly a prototype. Possibly a late one, but not launching yet regardless.
