Silicon Lottery Starts Selling Binned 3rd Generation AMD Ryzen CPUs

Silicon Lottery, a company specializing in the process called binning which involves testing of CPUs for particular features (overclocking potential in this case), has released its portfolio of 3rd generation of Ryzen CPUs. As of now, they are offering only Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 models, covering Ryzen 7 3700X, 3800X and Ryzen 9 3900X. Ryzen 9 3950X is said to be introduced in September and that is the date Silicon Lottery will reveal the information about overclocking potential of that model and frequencies they have achieved. Mid range Ryzen 5 models should be added at later date as well.


They have achieved the following frequencies at targeted voltage and price:

Ryzen 7 3700X

• 4.05 GHz @ 1.237 V, $300
• 4.10 GHz @ 1.25 V, $320
• 4.15 GHz @ 1.26 V, $340

Ryzen 7 3800X

• 4.20 GHz @ 1.275 V, $370
• 4.25 GHz @ 1.287 V, $430
• 4.30 GHz @ 1.300 V, $610

Ryzen 9 3900X

• 4.00 GHz @ 1.200 V, $470
• 4.05 GHz @ 1.212 V, $500
• 4.10 GHz @ 1.225 V, $530
• 4.15 GHz @ 1.237 V, $590
• 4.20 GHz @ 1.25 V, $810

It is interesting to note that Ryzen 9 3900X has achieved better frequencies at lower core Voltage than Ryzen 7 3800X. That is possibly due to better binning AMD does on its side for higher end models. 4.2 -> 4.3 GHz = 2.3% frequency increase
$370 -> $610 = 64.8% price increase
That's $2.40 per MHz.

4.0 -> 4.2 GHz = 5% frequency increase
$470 -> $810 = 72.3% price increase
That's $1.70 per MHz.

not sure how you consider them a scam, no one is forcing you to buy from SL. they offer a service and post the results very clearly, that is what you are paying extra for nothing more.

neither of you even bothered to look at the $30 discount SL is offering for its "dud" base level chips that dont do high all core overclocks. explain to me how giving a discount over retail pricing is scamming some one?

Ryzen is not a great overclocker, no matter what. Every time it seems ryzen 3000 top's out at 4.2 to 4.4 ghz. Most at 4.3 ghz. Only difference from these cpu and others you buy cheaper, is that silicon lottery binned cpu can hit those clock at a lower voltage good for noise, needed cooling and power bill.

But that 3900X for 810 usd. That must be a joke. And with lauch first til september any way, i think i am way better of waiting for 3950X that's cheaper, more cores and threads + as i know it, amd them self is bining chiplets for 3950X, infact amd is maybe even saving the very best chiplets for 3950X, so this cpu will have the lowest voltage vs. Core clock out of any ryzen 3000 cpu. So up at that price point and lauch time, i would say ryzen 9 3950X will properly turn out to be a way better choise.

How are they frauds? They are expensive yes, but they do document their methodology and their chips do what they say. I purchased a Skylake 5Ghz from them on a whim long ago... guess what? Did 5Ghz.

That dont change it OC very badly, the prizes here do reflect it.

One needs to be extremely UNlucky to get a Skylake that doesn't do 5Ghz with a proper cooler.

I remember those days when they were charging close to $1000 for a quad core that "Does 5ghz" when pretty much 90%+ of the chips out there could be overclocked to 5 Ghz anyway, by simply disabling the iGPU and having a beefy cooler on it.

Most of the Silicon Lottery Intel CPUs have some very unimpressive clocks and high voltages relative to the price they charge, and they use AVX offset. With a good motherboard and heatsink, the average Intel CPU can do 5.0 without AVX offset and across all cores. Paying extra for Silicon Lottery is throwing money away.

No, they cannot. You need an above average sample, and an above average cooler to accomplish this.

As of 6/13/19, the top 35% of tested 9900Ks were able to hit 5.0GHz or greater.

For those who want a binned chip, this is the way to go. Or you can buy several CPUs at a cost of thousands then take the time to bin and find it yourself...or you can roll the dice on the silicon lottery. My time is worth more than taking orders at McDonalds, about 5-7 times that in fact... yours?

This isn't for everyone, we get it. But to say they are scam is an outright lie and prominently displays ignorance front and center.

Side note on topic: The voltages they are using are less than I have seen many CPUs accomplish those same clock speeds.

Yes, the K version still give you better performance compared to the same NON K version. And even if you don't overclock it now, you might do it in the future.

Those frequencies and voltages needed make it very clear that the silicon lottery is not in our hands nor in SL's anymore.

AMD already builds the cpus around their lottery results. Bottom line, if you want fast Ryzen you buy high core count chips and pay accordingly.

No. They buy chips in bulk, test them for clocks, validate and stress test them, and then re-sell them with an upcharge for the labour and costs they've put in and incurred during that process. That's the entire premise of the company and it is exactly what they advertise they do. Charge you for a service they perform.

This is just absolute bull. Not only does my 6700k not get close to 5GHz, despite a de-lid and liquid metal treatment that keeps it under 60C at 4.8GHz under load, there are also almost no posts online claiming to be able to get 5GHz on a 6700k either. In fact, if you search for that, most of the results are people putting unwise voltages through their CPU (Well over 1.4 volts), and still being unable to reach it. One guy was "hoping" for 5GHz at 1.47V which is just ridiculous.

On this aspect, yes, they are.

This is basically selling 2nd hand products with manufacturer voided warranty for more than the manufacturer's price.

But the fault is on the buyers, not the sellers... since there is no law against selling 2nd hand stuff commercially.
So whatever, buy away $500 cpus with $1000. It's not my money.
