Noctua Introduces Chromax.black CPU Coolers

Noctua today introduced the long awaited all-black versions of its award-winning NH-D15, NH-U12S and NH-L9i CPU coolers. Staying true to the successful formula of the original models, the new chromax.black versions with their black fans and black coated heatsinks combine the same signature quiet cooling performance with a sleek stealth look. The NH-D15 chromax.black and NH-U12S chromax.black will initially be exclusively available in a Linus Tech Tips limited edition that includes extra orange anti-vibration pads and custom fan stickers.

"Our customers have been asking us for all-black coolers for a long time, but we're soldering the fins to the heatpipes in order to guarantee optimal performance over many years of usage and this production process is difficult to combine with coatings," explains Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). "It took a lot of time and engineering work to find an appropriate coating material and production process that gave us satisfactory thermal performance and consistent visual appearance. Now, we're proud with the end result and confident that the new chromax.black coolers will meet the high standards Noctua users have come to expect."



The new NH-D15 chromax.black, NH-U12S chromax.black and NH-L9i chromax.black are identical to the regular models except for the colour: Featuring black coated heatsinks, black fans with black anti-vibration-pads, black fan clips or fan screws and black mounting parts, they are literally black from head to toe. Thanks to thoroughgoing optimisations of the coating material and process, the chromax.black models provide the same, renowned quiet cooling performance as their regular, non-coated counterparts.

Teaming up with popular youtuber Linus Sebastian from Linus Tech Tips, the first 5000 pieces of NH-D15 chromax.black and NH-U12S chromax.black sold through Noctua's official Amazon and eBay stores will be an exclusive Linus Tech Tips limited edition that includes extra orange anti-vibration pads and custom Linus Tech Tips fan stickers. The Linus Tech Tips limited editions have a strictly limited volume and will only be available via Noctua's official Amazon and eBay stores while stock lasts. The non-limited versions of the NH-D15 chromax.black and NH-U12S chromax.black will start selling via Amazon as soon as the Linus Tech Tips limited editions are sold out and via other sales partners at the end of October.

In addition to the three new chromax.black cooler models, Noctua also introduced the new NA-SAVP3 anti-vibration pads in black, blue, green, red, white and yellow. These pads are compatible with all NF-A15 line fans such as those pre-installed on the NH-D15 chromax.black, thereby enabling users to colour-customise their coolers for individual build cooler schemes. The NF-F12 fan on the NH-U12S chromax.black can be colour-customised using the existing NA-AVP1 pads. In addition, both models are compatible with the NA-HC1/NA-HC2 (NH-U12S) and NA-HC3/NA-HC4 (NH-D15) heatsink covers as well as chromax line NA-EC1 and NA-YC1 cables that allow for further visual customisation.

Sounds like they went through a lot of trouble for the black heat sink. I would think that even the most vocal anti-brown crowd would have been ok with just black fans and perhaps a black/colored heat sink perimeter shroud. With that said, it does look very nice in all stealth black. A version that is black with raw copper heat pipes and cpu block would be pretty sweet as well. My next build coming up is going in a case that features a clear coated rusted steel patina, (not to be confused with a funky cold medina) so the OG brown A12x25's are already on the list and should fit in nicely.

I guess Noctua has to justify their premium pricing, though, to be fair, those from said brands are not cheap either, and they all perform as well or better than some ~$100 watercoolers.

I'd rather get a Thermalright or Raijintek, though, that perform almost as well for a lot less. Too bad they are starting to follow the trend of increasing prices.

I won't be replacing it, NH-D14 for life!!!

Ah I see we have similarly cooling setup then. Happy NH-D14 owner here as well also with 3 fans mounted. Just 120 mm, but it is 3 of noctua industrial ippc fans rated for up to 3000 rpm to cool my old i7 980X.

But I will be buying a NH-D15 for my upcoming ryzen 9 3950X build/upgrade and who knows maybe with 3 fans mounted again.

So yeah in the near future I will be owning NH-D14 and NH-D15 at the same time.

As I said. Ghetto mods used. But any way, it's gonna changes with the ryzen build.

To me it really doesn't matter what fans D15 comes with, as I will be replacing them with there industrial ipps fans. I really like the ippc fans as they have a very wide rpm range from 300 rpm to 3000 rpm. So I can have bofh a dead silent setup and have high performance for benchmark runs or if I need a high overclock for a demanding task, all through I don't think with a 3950X. I will be in the need of ekstra performance the coming years.

This. I guess it will be another 4 years until those appear judging by the heatsink progress.

For those that don't understand: NF-A12's are the new generation Noctua fans on the market. I believe these came out last year after like 5 years of R&D.

I sure hope they've improved coating over the one used by BeQuiet, mine scored a nice scratch simply by attaching the fan as described in user manual.

especially when you have triple fans on it, the silver metal looks wicked behind dark glass. its a monstrosity with 3 fans on it, very nice looking imo.
