Steam has revealed the games that sold the most on the platform for this year of 2019. While Steam's own numbers don't represent the entirety of the PC market - considering other digital storefronts such as GOG, EPIC Games Store and publisher-exclusive stores like Origin also have a relevant market share - this does let us take a considered peek at the PC gaming landscape. Steam's top sellers also includes top grossing, where games that have store-bound skins or extras are also taken into account).

Steam's Platinum lineup includes all the hallmarks of PC gaming: online experiences such as Warframe, DOTA 2, PUBG, and the Elder Scrolls Online, through strategy experiences such as Civilization VI and Total War: Three Kingdoms. Considering that Destiny 2 also made it in the platform, many gamers actually enjoy that experience - it is unclear if Steam considers every redeem from the Blizzard store into the Steam Store a sale, but if not, it's mighty impressive that a game that released on October 1st.

Moving on to the second category, and Gold-rated games by virtue of their sales includes the excellent The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, which has received a definite boost from the expectation and popularity of the recently-launched Netflix series: though to say that the game rocketed to Gold position on the back of the Netflix show would just be naive. It is an excellent game, and an excellent experience, and that shows. Halo: The Master Chief Collection has only launched on of its bundled six games - and on December 3rd, no less - but that and the time available for pre order has ensured an extremely healthy Gold sales spot for the collection. Red Dead Redemption only made it into the Silver tier, which may come as a surprise.

Games with more than 100,000 simultaneous players include Total War: Three Kingdoms, Sekiro, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Destiny 2.

VR games that sold the most include Fallout 4 VR and The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim VR, while Valve's own Half Life Alyx only made it into the Gold tier - which may make sense considering the game was only announced in the end of November.

Tried the free version of Destiny 2 when it was under Blizzard but I'm yet to install the Steam version since they moved, even tho I did migrate my account/chars.

I think it's a bug when @Raevenlord screencapped the pictures. Virtual Desktop in the last VR section image has the white bar too.

I'm surprised to see Wallpaper Engine on the most played list. That's not a game

Also, nice to see some older games still get quite a bit of love, like Age of Empires II (both the 2013 HD edition and the new Definitive Edition) and Left 4 Dead 2.

I'll say, though, I didn't expect No Man's Sky to be that popular still, surpassing the 50k simultaneous players mark...

games with over 100,000? surprised its that low of a number. probably embarrassing for them to release csgo max simultaneous numbers versus say fortnites. i wouldn't be surprised if fortnite is 10x higher in number than anything on steam

Yeah there are settings in Wallpaper Engine that allows you to not let the Steam Overlay show it as a game (similar to Borderless Gaming). I use it myself and also have it start up with Windows but you can have other games take over your currently playing status.

Hmmm... You could check Steam Stats (https://store.steampowered.com/stats/)

Granted, it only shows today's currently most played, but it can give you an idea.

Epic Games reported that there were 78.3 million active Fortnite players in August 2018 – marking the highest monthly usage figure in the history of the game. The record number of concurrent Fortnite players stands at 8.3 million, which came in the wake of the game's launch in South Korea

686k versus 8.3 million. well I was close :D

Why are you comparing a desktop game with a mobile game? Shouldnt you compare it with pubg mobile? I also believe that fornites actual opponet is Minecraft.

Comparing numbers from paid game to something that is free-to-play will not give comparable results. But anyway:
- CS:GO peak concurrent player count is 830K. Keep in mind that CS:GO has been a game you need to buy for most of its lifetime (which is since 2012).
- PUBG is probably a better comparison to Fortnite and this one peaked at 3.2M (on Steam alone) if I remember correctly and that is also a paid game.
- Fortnite player count includes mobile crowd, which is incredibly massive. I would really like to see a breakdown of Fortnite usage statistics in terms of platforms.

Steams list shows the exodus EGS has created. How many of those games are 2019, or even 2018 releases? And of those that are new... how many are actual big sales cannons? I think this list confirms that Steams offering is pretty bleak. In reality the platforms still floats on what has always carried it: simple and free online mp games. The fact CS GO is still so prominent is telling.

Funny how I have only three of those (PUBG, RE2, Beat Saber).. I guess that I just play older and not-so-mainstream games.

Can a F2P game like warframe really count as a 'big seller'???

I mean it has a lot of players but a lot of them are really disappointed at the quality of current updates and content in general...

DE the developer make very big promises when it comes to content but whatever gets released is pretty stale and a lot of veterans have actually quit the game
