Noctua confirmed that Intel's upcoming 10th generation Core "Comet Lake-S" processor's LGA1200 CPU socket has an identical cooler compatibility with LGA115x-series sockets, such as LGA1151, LGA1150, LGA1155, and LGA1156. Most of Noctua's LGA115x-compatible coolers will seamlessly fit on LGA1200 motherboards. A selection of Noctua's older coolers can be made compatible for LGA1200 by requesting Noctua for a free NM-i115x upgrade kit. Some of the really old (think pre-Lynnfield) Noctua coolers can be made to support LGA1200, but are not eligible for the free NM-i115x upgrade kit offer. Yet another list of Noctua coolers, such as those tailor-made for SP3, won't support LGA1200 at all, since they don't support the NM-i115x module. The rule of the thumb hence is "if it supports LGA1151, it will support LGA1200."

The list of Noctua coolers that seamlessly support LGA1200 include NH-C12P SE14, NH-C14, NH-C14S, NH-D15, NH-D15 chromax.black, NH-D15S, NH-D14, NH-L12, NH-L12S, NH-L9i, NH-L9i chromax-black, NH-L9x65, NH-U14S, NH-U12A, NH-U12S, NH-U12S chromax.black, NH-U12P SE2, NH-U9S, NH-D9L, and NH-U9B SE2. The coolers eligible for a free NM-i115x upgrade kit are: NH-C12P, NH-D15 SE-AM4, NH-L9x65 SE-AM4, NH-U12, NH-U12F, NH-U12P, NH-U12P SE1366, NH-U12S SE-AM4, NH-U9, NH-U9F, and NH-U9B. Among the older coolers that support LGA1200 though a NM-i115x module purchased separately, are NH-U12DO (except A3 variant), NH-U12DX, NH-U12DX 1366, NH-U12DX i4, NH-U9DX i4, NH-U9DX 1366, and NH-U9DO.

Wasn't this confirmed by Intel long time ago? LGA1200 has the same layout (screws, height, IHS area).

Hence, there's no reason why any LGA1151 cooler wouldn't be automatically compatible with the new platform (although, for formal reasons, manufacturers confirm that).

If the two sockets are identical in terms of cooler compatibility, then shouldn't all of Noctua's (and those of other companies) 115x coolers fit seamlessly?

Yes, all.
Always check the source.

"The heatsink mounting on Intel's new LGA1200 platform (code name Comet Lake S) is identical to all LGA115x sockets (LGA1150, LGA1151, LGA1155, LGA1156). Therefore, all Noctua CPU coolers that support LGA115x also support LGA1200 and don't require any mountig updates. Many other cooler models that do not support LGA115x can be made compatible free of charge with the NM-i115x Upgrade-Kit. "

Yup, everyone kinda already knew this, but a good way for Noctua to grab a headline and remind us they're still out there.

BTW Noctua, where's the 1.5kg fanless heatsink from Computex 2019? :)

Where's the C14S successor from Computex 2018?

Hoping one of those C-class coolers is ready to ship by Alder Lake...

The burning question is: Will socket LGA1700 next year also be compatible? I think not. :p

Easily. It's longer, but not wider. No reason to move screws, which are placed far from the LGA1151 socket.
In fact, many LGA1151 coolers are compatible with LGA2066 (52.5 × 45 mm). In case of Noctua: all apart from the low-profile L9i. I wouldn't worry too much.
Even if Intel alters screw layout, Noctua will probably offer a mounting kit.

Almost hoping they do, and Noctua does offer new mounting kits. Even a larger cold plate to match LGA1700, mainstream has been using the same small socket and IHS for so long, maybe I'm the odd man out, but I think it's time for a change, larger socket - chiplets 10nm 7nm all sounds good to me.

Have had great success with Noctua C-type coolers - the downfiring airflow configuration is ideal for open builds using no case fans. Go Noctua!

Only wish the process from prototype to availability didn't take so darn long, but finding new ways to cool the same square space within common height and width restrictions I would suspect isn't easy.

Own (2) of these NH-C14S coolers (below) currently and would love to upgrade at least one them for LGA1700.

Caution: incoming large image. :)
