In a recent Microsoft blog post, Mojang Studios announced that Minecraft has sold over 200 million copies to date, with 126 million active monthly players. This achievement comes 11 years after the game was originally released in May 2009 as a Java applet on an online forum. To this day Minecraft has remained as one of the world's most popular games from being the most-watched game on YouTube in 2019 to getting released on almost every device imaginable and still actively receiving updates.

Some (math?) genius is going to discover a way to compress and represent voxel data a lot more efficiently and then we'll get a real successor to Minecraft.

Or at least make the current Minecraft less bloated and inefficient

I reckon any sort of follow up to Minecraft will have to implement a solid physics engine. A successor needs to have some new, defining feature like that. Out goes the efficiency... :)

Nice avatar man, artsy fartsy

Wow 200 mil copies...I guess to each his own as they say. Never understood the appeal of this game to the people. Always looked so boring to me, there are no titans and guns and legends, and guns and finishing moves and guns...oh wait did I miss the gun-part? :D

Mincraft was introduced to me as "like dwarf fortress but first person", hence my permanent dissapointment in it.

If only minecraft looked like in that first artwork.
