Sony Plans to Create PS5 Exclusive Games With No PS4 Backwards Compatibility

Microsoft has been praised for its continued support of previous console generations with the latest Xbox Series X maintaining compatibility with some games going back to the original Xbox along with controller and accessory inter compatibility. It seems that for the first few years most games will be released for both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X families of consoles. Sony seems to be taking a much conservative approach and hoping to take full advantage of the new PS5 features and updated DualSense controller to create iconic exclusives for the console.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sony's Interactive Entertainment's CEO, Jim Ryan confirmed that the company plans to create games "that can really only be enjoyed on PS5." This approach will likely irritate PS4 users who have invested heavily in the console with controllers and other accessories, Sony believes that this approach will help the company to make the most out of their new console hardware.

I honestly don't see what's so newsworthy about this. If they want to create games that target PS5 specifically, that's good for them. I'm sure the people buying the PS5 wouldn't mind that whatsoever.

And what do the people who bought PS4 have to complain about? It's not like it's anything new, when a newer gen comes out and they don't get new games after 2-3 years. They can still play current PS4 games just fine.

So they're going to focus on making PS5 games when the PS5 releases. This shouldn't be a problem. Why would you continue to develop games for the old console?

"Invested heavily in the old console"? It's not like nobody saw this coming. New, more powerful consoles come out every once in a while... isn't that a good thing?

nothing new here, wait for a year or two and it comes to pc.

"only be enjoyed in playstation 5?" graphics wise? controller wise?

Good news, as for me this makes perfect sense.

However, I still hope there will be some form of backward compatibility.

Ah.. I see you don't know much about Sony.

And feature wise, that includes graphics, performance, audio, controller, everything new the PS5 can do that the 4 can't.

But honestly, this is a great thing. The title and article are a bit misleading however. When people talk about backwards compatibility then mean playing the older games on the new console, not the new games on the old console and this news article mixes both in.
No one should care about playing new games on old hardware, it'll just hold the games back.

I played Final Fantasy 7 Remake last week, there are so many invisible loading screens waiting for the HDD to keep up. A lot of games will greatly benefit from PS5's SSD.

Sony will once again destroy MS with the games and not the machine. It was that way and will be that way.

MS is once again way too focused on hardware and fails to create a flow where devs bring unique content. We already know MS will bring sports games, shooters, some Minecraft spin offs and other stuff that will leverage new gadgets. Maybe the odd big first party exclusive that will be overhyped.

All the writings are on the wall. What was Kinect is now "big specs" and some HMD based stuff. Lots of features like backwards compatibility etc. But where are the killer apps??

Troll question here: How can you "invest heavily" in a console?

The PS4 was $399.99 on release. My CPU alone was more than that and my GPU was almost twice that. How the bloody hell can you invest HEAVILY in something that's sole argument is being CHEAP?!?

So, Death Stranding 2 *omegalul*

Its obvious really, do "we" complaining about PS4 games that cant run on PS3? There will be a certain developer chooses to release on both platform, but that's different stories.

Heavily invested would be into the games I reckon.Much like you invest in a Steam account for example.

Yet another example that underlines PC advantages and it definitely being the cheaper option. Full backwards conpatibility no questions asked. Your shit even runs better every time :)

Exactly that.
The PlayStation is the bait then consumers are slugged recurring costs for games.
That is how they recoup their investment dollars.

Now add internet account to the online stores (so you spend money so you can spend more money, on a per month basis) with some side little bonus' (like some odd free gifts or....playing with your friends which is free on PC for such services minus MMO's).

PS2 had its last game a week before PS4 was released in NA.

No, the old generation isn't abandoned for a while.

That’s just about one of the most iterative kind of games around. The PS2 didn’t use the same engine as the other versions so pretty much all they did was grab the previous one, update the menus and teams/players and call it a day. I wouldn’t really call it a “new” game.

Yes, console sales have always been about games. Even when typical PC gamers buy consoles, it's always about which console offers the games they are interested in, not which one offers the most TFlops, fastest SSD or most memory bandwidth.

These fancy special features of the consoles are gimmicks anyway. All but a handful games will use generic off-the-shelf game engines, do no low-level coding at all, and not harness the benefits of a super advanced SSD configuration etc.

The business model of consoles is to lock you into a platform by offering a console at a loss while hoping you will buy enough overpriced games, controllers and various other crap to break even.

It's pretty much the same business model as printers, where the ink costs more than the printer.

I agree. While I own an Xbox One X, my primary usage for it is for media playback (mainly for its UHD Bluray drive) and some occasional gaming session in the living room. If I am looking at gaming, PS4 Pro would have been my preferred option since most of the exclusive and good titles are there. Even Nintendo Switch would have been a better gaming option from my perspective. Most games you find on Xbox, you can find them on PC, PS4, etc. Basically nothing really special for me to own it on Xbox.

A rare case indeed. I do recall a lot of games being available on both consoles for some time after the new console is released, but in my opinion, I don't see a reason for it.

I remember that some of the cross gen titles being released back in the day were pretty much a completely different games developed by different teams.

Sony needs system sellers for PS5 and those will probably be primarily developed by their own studios. AAA publishers will stick to cross gen for a year or so and then move on.

I'm waiting for Rev C or Slim variant of PS5, since I want to avoid the f'ups of launch devices.

Sony keep on keeping on. Your fan boys will keep throwing cash at you despite the regular beatings or because of them...

Gotta say, this story is about as important as "water is wet".

I get what Sony is saying but I'm pretty sure some games already have the feature they're adding....It's just not available for their current console...and I'm pretty sure Microsoft is giving the owners of those games the update with the new Xbox.

As an owner of both current consoles I have to say it looks like Sony is flopping this gen hardcore....My wife who really plays the PS4 heard this and said "So were just getting a new Xbox"....as opposed to both again.

This is good news and I agree with Sony's approach. If you're diverting development resources to make sure your next-gen title works on last-gen it's wasted potential that will ultimately hold back the next-gen title in some way. I got what I wanted out of the PS4 and I'm content with bringing those games with me to the PS5 and gifting the PS4 to someone else.

I agree. You absolutely want game developers to be using the new hardware to make better games instead of dumbing everything down so that it can run on obsolete hardware.
