Cypress Ships its One Billionth USB-C Device

Cypress, an Infineon Technologies Company, today announced that in less than five years, the company has achieved a landmark milestone by shipping its one billionth USB-C device. As the leading provider of USB-C technology, Cypress' leadership position spans a wide range of markets with its controllers used within mobile, computing, and power applications.

Cypress offers the industry's most complete portfolio of USB solutions, including device controllers, embedded hosts, hubs, application-specific bridges, and transceivers. Cypress' EZ-PD portfolio was the first in the industry to support the latest USB Power Delivery (USB PD) 3.0 specification, which enables more robust end-to-end power delivery and charging solutions for laptop and mobile devices. Cypress also offers AEC-Q100 certified versions of its controllers for automotive-grade performance.

If this is REALLY true and not just marketing hype, then why haven't we seen moar case mfgr's putting moar C ports in their new cases over the last 2 years.. since as we all know that increased production & sales means reduced costs per piece (at least when purchased in volume anyways)

Because
a) laptop designs are refreshed yearly with a 1.5-2-year design cycle. Desktop case designs often last 5 or more years and don't really have an identifiable design cycle.
b) type-C is found mostly in space-constrained devices (peripherals, phones, laptops)
c) most type-C devices ship with C-to-A cables for the sake of compatibility with older host devices.
d) volume purchase pricing doesn't come close to alleviating the added cost from type-C on a case: the cabling is more complex, the connector is more difficult to implement, etc. It's not much, but a $2-3 BOM increase (remember, a USB-C 3.2G2 connector needs the same cabling as two type A G1 connectors) eats into case manufacturer margins significantly.
e) the desktop case market is absolutely tiny compared to all other markets where these connectors are relevant.

All in all, it makes perfect sense that desktop cases are slow to adopt USB-C.
