PS3 owners in Europe will soon be able to enjoy recording digital TV via their consoles. Sony has released a plug-in TV tuner that enables the PS3 to record video. The personal video recording software has been dubbed "PlayTV".

Interesting but will this ever come over to the USA I can already see some major catfights happening by some companies here in the states. :slap::nutkick::nutkick:

Yep, I'm guessing that's why it hasn't happened here yet... but if TiVo can do it....

looks like sony what their device to be the home media centre device for the mainstream. it is a good add on but with the built in record function on satellite receivers and boxes dvb boxes i doubt it will sell well unless they are planning to bundle it with the console.

I dont doubt it will sell. You have to look at it that not everyone can afford Tivo or DVR boxes and what not (monthly fees associated and what have you.) this is a do it all type console. Now they have thrown in recording DIGITAL *read HDTV to an extent* in crisp clarity and brilliant sound. I see huge things with this and for the PS3.

Agreed.

For me this would mean one less box under the tv as I could get rid of my freeview receiver (set top box). It would also mean I could record one show whilst watching another (something I can't do currently but would be quite nice)

This would also negate any reason for me needing to buy a HTPC to do the above job.

Hopefully the price will be nice.

EDIT: Just thought of something, I assume this would connect to the PS3 via USB? If so then why couldn't Sony have put a USB port on the back of the console (ie like microsoft did). I don't like seeing cables coming out of the front of the console if I can help it.

It's probably wireless but ykw its just a sham in my opinion because I just don't see it happening like Tivo in the USA IPTV FTW:rockout::rockout::rockout:

I forgot about the wireless capabilities. That would make sense.

I would imagine that this product will be big in certain markets (say the uk where we are quite limited to tv services) but not in others (US judging by the comments so far)

I think it's a great idea. I would have to see their implementation first hand before I bought it, tho.

If this is released in the US in the next couple years, it will play right into the laws taking affect in 2009 IIRC mandating all channels broadcast HD signal. Currenty I get all my local channels free & in HD via HD antenna and would love to be able to record shows.

WOOT I love my free OTA HD. If you want to record it buy a tv tuner with hd capabilities.
